II. OBJECTIVES: At the end of the lesson, the student will be able to;

1. Describe integers;
2. Add and subtract two integers using number line;
3. Add and subtract two integers with like and unlike signs.

III. ROUTINARY PROCEDURES:

Prayer
Greetings
Setting
Checking of Attendance
Review of the previous lesson

IV. LESSON PROPER/METHODOLOGY:

A. ACTIVITY :
Solve the following equation according to its operation.

25
B. DISCUSSION:

In the above operations, can you describe integers?

C. INPUT:

INTEGERS - refer to the set of whole numbers and their opposites.

A. Addition of Integers Using Number Line

Rules for adding integers using the number line:

To add a positive integer, move to the right on the number line.
To add a negative integer, move to the left on the number line.

Example # 1:

On the number line, start with point 4 and count 6 units to the left. At what
point on the number line does it stop ? It stops at point -2; hence, 4 + (-6) = -2.

Example # 2:

On the number line, start from -3 and count 7 units going to the right since the sign of 7
is positive. At which point does it stop? It stops at point 4; hence, (-3) + (7) = 4.

Practice
a. (-5) + (-4)
b. (-8) + (5)
B. Subtraction of Integers Using Number Line

To subtract integers, change the sign on the integer that is to be subtracted.

If both signs are positive, the answer will be positive.
Example: 12 - (-4) = 12 + 4 = 12
If both signs are negative, the answer will be negative.
Example: -12 - (+4) = -12 - 4 = -16
If the signs are different subtract the smaller absolute value from the larger
absolute value. The sign will be the sign of the integer that produced the larger
absolute value.
Example: 12 - (+4) = 12 - 4 = 16
Example: -12 - (-4) = -12 + 4 = -16

Example:  (5 – 3)

We can write this as 5 + (-3). Both 5 -3 and 5 + (-3) = 2. When we subtract a

positive number, we move to the left on the number line. This is the same
thing that happens when we add a negative number.

Practice: Subtract integers using number line:

1. 9−2=¿
2. 6−(−4 )=¿
3. (−10 ) −7=¿

Operation Like signs Unlike signs

Add the integers and keep Subtract the integers and
ADDITION OF INTEGERS the sign take the sign of the integer
USING THE RULES with the largest absolute
Rule 1: When the integers have Examples : value.
like signs, add the numbers (-5) + (-4)= -9 Examples :
and copy the common sign.
8 + 5 = 13 7 + (-4) = 3

Rule 2: When the integers have -9 + 4 = -5

unlike signs, subtract the
numbers and use the sign of
the number with the greater
absolute value.
SUBTRACTION OF INTEGERS Change the sign of the subtrahend, and then proceed to
addition.
Examples :
4 – (-6) = 4+6 = 10
-9 – (-5) = -9 +5 = -4

D. DEEPENING:
Practice:
Add the following: Subtract the following:
1. (-5) + (-10) = 1. 9 - 2 =
2. (3) + (-9) = 2. 11 – (-4) =
3. (13) + (-3) = 3. (-15) - (-7) =
4. (-8) + (2) 4. 5 – (- 10) =

E. SYNTHESIS:
Continue to process the students with these questions:
Why do you have to follow rules in solving integer operations?
In real life, what do you think are familiar situations to like and unlike
signs? (in the family or community)

F. EVALUATION/ASSESSMENT:

Addition of Integers Subtraction of Integers

Solve the following using number line Find the difference using number line

1. 2+2=¿ 1. 5−2 =
2. 4 +3=¿ 2. (−6 )−(−3 ) =
3. (−1)+5 = 3. 4−4 =
4. 6+ (−3 )= 4. 3−5=
5. 10+1= 5. 6−(−2 )=
