PROBLEM

• Tragedy struck in December, 1988,


when Pan Am Flight 103 was destroyed by a
terrorist bomb over Lockerbie,
Scotland, killing 270 people in the air and on
the ground.
• The accidents and incidents
involving American airline Pan
American World Airways. The airline
suffered a total of 95 incidents.

• Pan Am, having once called itself “The
World's Most Experienced Airline”,
eventually filed for bankruptcy
protection in January 1991. Due to
rising fuel costs, as well as an inability
to operate domestic routes
the airline was starting to run at a loss.
• After selling most of its international
routes to raise operating funds, Pan
Am ended in bankruptcy in December
1991.

1991 demise of Pan American World Airways, some
say that the company's long slide started with
founder Juan Terry Trippe, viewed by many as
arrogant in conducting business and who never
planned for a qualified, long-term successor. Others
argue that the company's downfall came from more
fundamental causes, such as poor management,
deregulation, unions, apathy and etc.

• After the incident; the training academy was
permitted to remain open independently in
1992 under its current name, Pan Am
International Flight Academy. The company
began operations by using the flight
stimulator of the former airline at the same
campus location.
• In 2006, American Capital Strategies
invested $58 million in Pan Am. Pan Am
International Flight Academy, based out of
Miami International Airport, has trained a
substantial number of students from India.

• In 2010 Pan Am International Flight Academy
purchased Miami-based Aero service Aviation
Center, LLC, located only a few blocks away. Under
the terms of this agreement Pan Am purchased all
of Aero service's training and simulator assets,
adding significantly to Pan Am's Miami training

• On July 30, 2013, ANA Holdings, the holding
company of All Nippon Airways, announced they
will acquire Pan Am Holdings, including Pan Am
International Flight Academy.

facilities in Las Vegas, Kissimmee, Tokyo and
London and is currently providing training to clients
in Asia and Europe through participating partners.

• Aspiring Pilot and Flight Attendant is not the
only target market of Pan Am but also, Pan Am
negotiate with the well known and bigger airlines
company worldwide.
• Also Pan Am brand is well known when it came
to world airways. The legacy that had been thrive
by that accident.

• Since Pan Am ceased operations, the Pan Am brand

years after filing for bankruptcy. It restarted as a shell of the
company that originally started in 1928 and was one the most
recognized airlines in the world.
• Pan Am merged with Fort Lauderdale-based Carnival Airlines.
Carnival’s billionaire owner Micky Arison contributed $30
million to become the controlling shareholder, while Pan Am
put its famous blue-globe logo on Carnival Airlines’ larger
fleet.
• The new Pan Am began with 250 employees and three jets,
offering one daily flight between New York and Miami, and
New York and Los Angeles. It eventually carried 5,000
passengers daily to 14 cities, serving Florida, the Northeast,
Midwest and Puerto Rico.
Summary
• Pan American World Airways is known as a symbol
of the historic days of aviation. While the airline was
the largest international carrier in the United States
until its demise in 1991.
• At its peak the airline also set two around the world
records, both using the B747. The airline was fairly
old when it ceased operations due to bankruptcy.
• Founded in 1927, the airline would be 91 had it
survived to the present day. Instead, it ceased
operations in 1991 at 64 years old. The Pan Am
name lives on, however, and has now been adopted
by a private rail transport company.
