Topic Outline and Sentence Outline

There are two basic types of outlines: topic outlines and sentence outlines. A topic outline uses short phrases to hierarchically arrange ideas, while a sentence outline uses complete sentences to organize more specific and complex details. Outlines can vary in specificity from very general to very detailed. Creating an effective outline involves identifying the topic, main categories, and subcategories. A complete outline consists of a title, purpose statement, and body using Roman numerals, capital letters, Arabic numerals, small letters, and parentheses to denote successive divisions and show the relationship between topics.
