Introduction:
 Transportation planning consists of application of science
and art, where a great deal of judgment couple with its
technical element is required to arrive at a meaningful
decision in order to develop transportation infrastructure
facilities for the community.

 Two key elements to make transport system safe and

efficient, as it plays an important role in economic,
industrial, social and cultural development are mobility and
accessibility.
 Transportation is important in all stages starting from the
production to distribution.

 The balanced development of any region is a step forward

achieving a sustainable transport system.

 It is most important and permanent feature of a city and

metropolitan area.

 Due to rapid and dynamic nature of current urban

development, transport planning is very complex and need
to achieved with systematic and rational approach.
Aims and Objectives:

 The Ministry of Urban Development, Govt of India

highlights the need for carrying Comprehensive Mobility
Plan (CMP) to ensure greater degree of mobility.

 The primary purpose of transportation planning is to

prepare a systematic plan, which will ensure safe and
smooth movement of all types of traffic.

 The main aim of transport planning is to ensure the need

of mobility for all sections of people.
Independence of Land Use and Transport
 Land use and Transport are independent components that
are assumed mutually influence time to time.

 Land use characteristics and transportation are mutually

interrelated.

 Land is a convenient measure of space and land use

provides a spatial framework for urban development and
activities.

 These relationship is sometimes known as Land use-

transport Cycle.
Transportation Problems in Indian Cities:
 Haphazard and unplanned development

 Limitation of allocation of lands for roads

 Heterogeneity of traffic characteristics

 Poor public transport facilities

 Poor Traffic management & enforcement

 Degradation of environment

 High rate of road accidents

 Vehicle ownership
Policies for Urban Transport Planning:
 Transport policy is a way of regulating and controlling the
provision of transport.

 It is to be developed as per the response to the needs of

the society.

 The government has formulated National Urban Transport

Policy in 2006 which encourages the use of cleaner
technologies.
Transport Planning Process:
Levels of Planning:
 Micro-level Planning:

For site specific at smaller level like analyzing a road

intersection

 Mesho-level Planning:

For Corridor level like highway management

 Macro-level Planning:

If planning is to be made at city or metropolitan level

Citizen Participation:
 Since the transportation plans are essentially intended to
serve the community and their aspirations it is necessary
to consult the affected people in the community and give
them voice in the formulations of decisions.

 The best proposal can be discussed by involving the

community or citizen in the study area.
Technology applications for planning:

 Better Planning tools and software are increasingly

available to help the professionals in executing the work
efficiently and understanding the impact of their decisions
on transportation network.

 Geographic Information System (GIS) assist planners in

executing the project with successful planning and design.
Future Development:

 The modern phenomena of growing populations and

increased urbanization increase demands on sustainable
and efficient urban transport solutions.

 Solutions must address traffic safety, reduce accidents

and help avoid congestion

 One key aspect is also the emerging need for efficient

public transportations
Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS):
 Key components are
 Dedicated Central Lanes
 Quicker Travel
 Affordable fares and Efficient
Fare Collection
Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS):

 It is a passenger transport system in an urban area with a

high capacity and frequency, and grade separation from
other traffic

 Rapid transit systems are typically located either in

underground tunnels or on elevated viaducts above street
level.
Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS):

 The core of ITS consists in obtaining, processing, and

distributing information for better use of transportation
system, infrastructure and services

 ITS is a concept that will contribute to the more efficient

use of infrastructure and transport solutions in the future.
 Some ITS Technologies used in Public Transport are

 Real-time passenger information/ Public Transport Travel

Information

 Smart Card Based Fare Collection/ Electronic Ticketing

 Surveillance/ CCTV/ Security Systems

Conclusion:
 Transportation planning is an integral part of any
city planning, so the transport plan should
achieve higher degree of safety and mobility.
 Technology also plays an important role to
execute the project with successful planning and
design.
