MME is the central box which handle the access of UE to the 4G network

Counterpart in the old access technology (2G/3G) is the SGSN

Comparison MME versus SGSN 2e
Common respectively analog functionalities:
- Mobility and Session Management handling
- S1, Iu release concept

Differences:
- MME is pure signaling box, SGSN also handles user plane, the first step
towards pure signaling is Direct Tunnel concept in SGSN
- Mobility and Session Management handled in one procedure in MME
while in SGSN the procedures are separated (Attach + PDP Context
Activation)

Starting with NS30 both functionalities MME and SGSN are within one ATCA box
