Verb: Definition

A verb is a word or a combination of words that indicates action or a state of being or condition. A verb
is the part of a sentence that tells us what the subject performs. Verbs are the hearts of English sentences.
Examples:
● Jacob walks in the morning. (A usual action)
● Mike is going to school. (A condition of action)
● Albert does not like to walk. (A negative action)
● Anna is a good girl. (A state of being)
Kinds of Verb
● Transitive & Intransitive verbs
● Reguler and Irregular verbs
● Finite and Non-Finite verbs
● Auxiliary verbs
● Stative verbs
● Modal verbs
TRANSITIVE VERBS
● A transitive verb is a verb that accepts one or more objects. This contrasts with
intransitive verbs, which do not have objects.
INTRANSITIVE VERBS
● intransitive verb. A verb that does not need a direct object to complete its meaning. Run,
sleep, travel, wonder, and die are all intransitive verbs. (Compare transitive verb.)
REGULAR VERBS
● A regular verb is any verb whose conjugation follows the typical pattern, or one of the
typical patterns, of the language to which it belongs.
IRREGULAR VERBS
● Irregular verbs are those verbs that do not have a specific formula to indicate them in its
past simple and past participle.
FINITE VERBS
● Finite verbs change their forms when there is a change in the number or person of the
subject. Finite verbs also have different forms in different tenses.
NON-FINITE VERBS
● Non-finite verbs do not change their form when the number or person of the subject
changes. There are mainly three types of non-finite verbs: infinitives, gerunds and
participles.
AUXILIARY VERBS
● An auxiliary verb (abbreviated AUX) is a verb that adds functional or grammatical meaning to the clause in which
it occurs, so as to express tense, aspect, modality, voice, emphasis, etc. Auxiliary verbs usually accompany an
infinitive verb or a participle, which respectively provide the main semantic content of the clause.
STATIVE VERBS
● Stative verbs describe a state rather than an action. They aren't usually used in the present
continuous form.
MODAL VERBS
● Modal verbs are auxiliary verbs (also called helping verbs) like can, will, could, shall, must, would,
might, and should. After a modal verb, the root form of a verb is generally used. The word to should not
appear after a modal verb. An exception is the phrase ought to, which is considered a modal verb.
