LEARNING
TARGETS
At the end of the lesson, you should be able to:
• divide polynomials using long
division and synthetic division,
and
• solve word problem that involves
dividing polynomials.
INTRODUCTION
TO
POLYNOMIALS
TERMS
- made up of two different
parts, the number parts and
the variable parts.
EXAMPLE:

3 - coefficient
X – variable
2 - exponent
COEFFICIEN
T
- can be positive or
negative integers.
EXPONENT
- are also called Power for
Indices.
POLYNOMIALS
is a combination of terms that are all

linked together using addition or

subtraction.
— POLYNOMIALS
Specific Terms of
Polynomials
 1 term – monomial
 2 terms – binomial
 3 terms – trinomial
 4 or more terms – polynomials

HOW TO DETERMINE OUR
DEGREE?

EXAMPLE:
TEST YOURSELF:

Polynomial of Terms (according to the Degree
number of terms)

Example: x2 + 2x + 1 3 Trinomial 2
1) x + 1 2 Binomial 1

2) 2x3 + 3x2 + 4x + 1 4 Polynomial 3

3) - 5x3 1 Monomial 3
4) x6 – 3x3 + 1 3 Trinomial 6

5) 3x3 + 2x 2 Binomial 3

PROBLEM NO: 1
During a school fund raising activity,
you were able to generate a total of
x3 - 9x - 3x2 + 27 pesos from selling
candies. If each candy costs x + 3
pesos, how many candies were you
able to sell?
Example 1:
Divide (x3 - 9x - 3x2 + 27) by (x + 3).

Solution:
1. Arrange the polynomials in descending
powers of x and write in the form divisor . If
there are missing terms, replace it with
2. Divide the first term of the dividend

by the first term of the divisor to get

the first term of the quotient:

3. Multiply the divisor by the first

term of the quotient.
4. Subtract the product from the

dividend then bring down the next

term.
5. Repeat steps 2 to 4. This
time, the difference and the
next term will be the new
dividend.
𝟐
− 𝟔 𝒙 ÷ 𝒙=− 𝟔 𝒙

(x+3)(-6x)=--18x
6. Continue the process until a
remainder is obtained. The
remainder can be zero or a
polynomial whose degree is lower
than the divisor.
+9
9 𝒙 ÷ 𝒙 =𝟗 𝒙

( 𝒙+𝟑 )( 9 𝒙 )= 𝟗 𝒙 +𝟐𝟕

Therefore, the quotient
is x - 6x + 9.

Example 2:
DIVIDE

Solution:
Follow the procedures shown from
example 1.
Example 3:
Divide (x3 - 9x - 3x2 + 27) by (x + 3) using synthetic
division.
Example 4:
Divide (2x4 - 3x2 + x – 4) by (x -2)

Solution:
1. Arrange the polynomials in descending
powers of x and write in the form divisor . If
there are missing terms, replace it with
Example 4:
Divide (2x4 - 3x2 + x – 4) by (x -2)

Solution:
1. Arrange the polynomials in descending
powers of x and write in the form divisor . If
there are missing terms, replace it with
