 • It is an important matter now because due to the Corona
Pandemic, a lot of countries have been hit hard; rich and poor
• This is a perfect timing to test out some sort of UBI especially for
WHY IS IT A people with fewer or no income at all.

income floor that can be paid out in cash to people, this is the
NOW? time to do it,” says Damon Jones, an economist at the University
of Chicago in Illinois.

CASE STUDY – IRAN &
CANADA
•  In 2010, the government of Iran ran a UBI trial, giving citizens transfers of
29 percent of the median income each month. Poverty and inequality were
reduced, and there was no sign of large amounts of people leaving the labor
market. In fact, people used it to invest in their businesses, encouraging the
growth of small enterprises.

•  In Canada, Ontario's government decided to launch a UBI experiment in

July of last year. But a few months ago, they decided to end the experiment—
two years ahead of schedule. Upon the conclusion of the trial, a Canadian
official called the experiment "quite expensive" and said "it was certainly not
going to be sustainable."
