TRANSCEDENCE

AND LIMITATION
By:Kleover Agtas
CHARACTERISTIC OF HUMAN PERSON IN THEIR
NATURAL CAPACITY FOR TRANSCEDENCE
 Refer to the capacity to go beyond
on their current situation in.

 Sartre explains that the human

capacity for transcendence is
rooted in the property of human
consciousness called INTENTIONALITY.
INTENTIONALITY
• Fundamental and inherent
property of consciousness.It is a
fundamental and inherent
because it is more basic than
the reflexivity of
consciousness,referring to the
ability of consciousness to be
about self.
2 TYPE OF CONSCIOUSNESS
 Intentional Consciousness-refer to
the ability of consciousness to about
itself.

 Self Consciousness-which is the

consciousness that is directed
towards itself.
 On the hand,Intentionality is an
inherent property of consciousness
because it is something not up to us
(or not something for us to
decide.)Meaning to say,whether we
like it or not, our belief, for
instance, will always be about
certain things.
3 KINDS OF INTENTIONALITY
 Inherent Intentionality
 Derived Intentionality
 Metaphorical Intentionality
 Inherent Intentionality-which is
intentionality of consciousness.

 Derived Intentionality-which is the

intentionality of language, maps and sign.

 Metaphorical Intentionality-which is the

intentionality that we sometimes
attribute to machines.
But why is consciousness
primarily and Inherently
directed at things outside
of itself?
 First, things that consciousness is
primarily directed at are outside or
transcendent to consciousness.

 Second, consciousness is always

transcending itself because in being
continuously conscious of things outside
of it self.
FACTORS THAT POSSIBLY LIMIT
ONE’S TRANSCEDENCE
There are generally three:
Natural Environment
Body
Other People
NATURAL ENVIRONMENT
 Factors pertaining to natural
environment include natural laws or
forces such as gravity, and natural
events such as storms, earthquake
or the simple fact that is raining.
BODY
 Factors pertaining to the body refer
to the various characteristic of the
body such as genetic make up,
physical attributes such as weight ,
complexion etc.
OTHER PEOPLE
 Factors pertaining to other people
include our concrete relations with
them and their mere perception of
us (especially when they classify us
as this or that kind of person)
In sum, the ability to transcend the present
situation of a human person is part of the nature
of a human person being a conscious individual .
However, means that he/she is free in that
he/she has the ability to make choice for
himself/herself . Furthermore, he/she lacks a
fixed essence in that he/she is always in the
process of filling up a gap or void in
himself/herself.Finally ,his/her facticity limits
his/her transcendence and freedom but only
because he/she has chosen to. In positive
light, this means that there is always hope for a
human person ,through the power of choice ,to
transcend whatever situation he/she is currently
in.
