MODULE 3 LESSON 2:

EVALUATING HUMAN
BEINGS LIMITATIONS
AND
TRANSCENDENCE
QUESTIONS…

 Have you ever wondered about

what is beyond our world or
universe?
Have you ever wanted to
become better at something
or learn something new?
Do you see yourself

becoming a better
person over time?
Have you ever imagined a life

that is better than what you are

living now?
 Human Nature and Limitations
 Human nature, being an embodied spirit has its

own limit. It can be said that the person is a very

biologically deficient being.
 Let us say for example that we do not have the

natural ability to fly, we cannot breathe

underwater, and we cannot even survive in certain
environments like other animals.
 But despite these limitations, we have used our

intellect to devise means to achieve several feats

such as building aircraft, breathable devices
underwater, and other mechanisms that helps
human to overcome its deficiency.
 Man is a limited being
 It is an acceptable idea that human beings are higher

in nature than other existing being like animals and

plants.
 Man does not only eat, grow, and feel but also think,

understand reality, and is able to create relationships

with other people.
 However, there are strengths of other beings that are limited
to man. Some animals have superior physical abilities in
terms of strength, eyesight, and other uses of their senses.
Likewise, man is limited in him/herself, that it cannot be
both at different places at the same time, cannot travel from
one country to another or communicate with relatives from
other places without the use of technologies.
 Human Nature and Limitations
 According to Abella (2016), the ability to

surpass limits is called transcendence,

and it is also one important trait that
distinguishes the human person from
other beings in existence.
 Transcendence also means overcoming

oneself or being in control even if the

body reminds us of certain tendencies.
 Transcendence originated from the Latin words trans,
meaning "go beyond," and scandare, meaning "climb.”
 It is the ability of man to experience reality beyond what
the physical body allows him to be.
 A person can travel to the past, to the future, or to other
places without actually going there. We can travel
through the use of our imagination.
 Likewise, transcendence also means understanding,
overcoming, and being in control of the one self. Being
able to control the self means that we are able to identify
our limitations and we make developments in order to
change ourselves for the better. Regardless of our status
in life, we open ourselves to new experiences and ideas
in order to have a meaningful existence.
 Human Nature and Limitations
 He further discusses that Philosophy gives

us useful tools to explore our limitations

and possibilities for transcendence.
 The idea is to acknowledge our

limitations, identify possibilities for

advancement, and change ourselves for
the better.
 Human Nature and Limitations
 It may be a physical or behavioral change
and mental activities but opening
ourselves to new experiences and
concepts is another aspect of
transcendence.
 Our capability for transcendence gives us

the opportunity to work toward becoming

better versions of ourselves.
Take note:

The essence of transcendence

is to acknowledge our
limitations, identify
possibilities for development,
and change ourselves for the
better.
Take note:
 Our human nature makes transcendence
possible. It refers to our ability to explore and
surpass our limits. We are able to transcend
our limits through our physical and mental
abilities. Our ability to transcend drives us to
become better persons and to improve
ourselves in every way. We can also transcend
our own selves when we govern ourselves
towards what is proper to our nature as a
person.
Take note:
 Fulfilling a goal requires transcendence as it
allows us to think and feel that despite the
physical and material challenges that we have
right now, we can still attain self-actualization,
much like Abraham Maslow's Hierarchy of
needs,
 Life Stories of Transcendental Existence
 Transcendence varies across all people and

may not happen to everyone, but here are

examples of people who have undergone self-
actualization despite their physical, material,
social and environmental limitations.
