How do limitations lead to transcendence?

26
1. What is the etymology of
“transcendence”?
2. Do you agree that human
transcendence will make his existence
more meaningful?

27
In philosophy, transcendence is the basic ground
concept from the word's literal meaning (from Latin), of
climbing or going beyond, albeit with varying connotations in
its different historical and cultural stages. It includes
philosophies, systems, and approaches that describe the
fundamental structures of being, not as an ontology (theory of
being), but as the framework of emergence and validation of
knowledge of being. "Transcendental" is a word derived from
the scholastic, designating the extra-categorical attributes of
beings.

28
Transcendence is the ability of human to
surpass his limits imposed by his body.

29
What is the primary tool that will allow us to go
beyond of our physical limits?

30
31
Further, human person has tendencies
or inclinations. Some of these are felt bodily
functions and they are experienced as a person
goes through life.
Example: Feeling of hunger but we can
control this within the bound of reason.

This is also called transcendence –

overcoming oneself or being in control.
32
Reading Comprehension Activity

33
One situation that exhibit limitations and
transcendence:
Situation 1:

Nell: (sigh) I keep getting a bad score in our Math quiz!

Mar: Hey, 7 out of 10 is not that bad! It is higher than
what you’ve got last quiz.
Nell: I know! But I really want to score a higher score or
even a perfect score next time.

34
HOTS Question:
1. Based on the dialogue, what personal
limit is being experienced?
2. What is the nature of limit experienced
by Nell (the protagonist in the story)?
3. If you were the one to give Nell advice
on how to surpass his limitation, what will you
say?
35
Conclusion
Philosophy gives us useful tools to explore our
limitations and possibilities for transcendence. The
essence of transcendence is to acknowledge our
limitations, identify possibilities for development, and
change ourselves for the better. It may be a physical or
behavioral change such as trying a new sport or hobby
or adopting a healthier lifestyle. You can also take on
mental challenge such as learning a new skill or doing
better in your studies.
36
Conclusion
Another aspect of transcendence is opening
yourself to new experience and ideas. Our
capacity for transcendence gives us the
opportunity to work toward becoming better
versions of ourselves.

Openness of Oneself
37
Transcendence is the capacity to go
beyond one’s limitations

Tool that can help human to surpass his

limit is his own MIND.
