PROJECT ORGANIZATION

 is a structure that facilitates the coordination and implementation

of project activities.
 its main purposes is to create an environment that fosters
interactions among the team members with a minimum amount
of disruptions, overlaps and conflict.
TYPES OF PROJECT ORGANIZATIONAL
STRUCTURE

 Matrix organizational structure
FUNCTIONAL ORGANIZATIONAL
STRUCTURE
 type of organizational structure which divides the organization
into departments based on their function.
 headed by a “functional manager” and employees are grouped
as per their role.
ADVANTAGES OF F.O.S

 Employees are grouped by their knowledge and skills, allowing them to

achieve high performance.
 Their roles and responsibilities are fixed, facilitating easy accountability for
the work.
 The hierarchy is clear. This reduces the number of communication
channels.
 Communication is frictionless within the department.
 Cooperation is excellent within the department.
DISADVANTAGES OF F.O.S

 The departments have a self-centered mentality.

 Employees may feel bored because of repetitive work.
 Communication is weak among the departments.
 There is a lack of teamwork among different departments.

PROJECT-BASED ORGANIZATIONAL
STRUCTURE

 opposite of functional organizational structure
 “Project Managers” are in charge and they have complete
authority over resources. All team members report to them.
ADVANTAGES OF P.B.O.S

 Team members are loyal to the project goal.

 Team members report directly to project managers; the line of authority is
clear. This reduces conflict and decision making is faster and more flexible.
 Communication is fast because of a single authority.
 Team members become more versatile and flexible due to working on
different projects.
DISADVANTAGES OF P.B.O.S

 Poor communication can cause resource duplication if there are multiple
projects.
 Absolute authority can make project manager arrogant.
 Projects always have deadlines and tight schedules, which can make the
work environment stressful.
MATRIX ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE

 the authority of a functional manager flows downwards, and the

influence of the project manager flows horizontally.
 employees may report many managers.
TYPES OF MATRIX ORGANIZATIONAL
STRUCTURE
 Strong Matrix Structure - the project manager has the authority and a full-
time role
 Balanced Matrix Structure - project and functional managers share the
authority.
 Weak Matrix Structure - the project managers have limited authority.
ADVANTAGES OF M.O.S

 Highly skilled and capable resources can be shared.

 The matrix structure is dynamic.
 Employees can enhance their skills and knowledge by taking part in
different projects.
 Resource usage is optimal.
DISADVANTAGES OF M.O.S

 Employees may have to report to two managers which adds confusion and
may cause conflict.
 Employees may be confused about their roles and responsibilities.
 There can be competition for scarce resources.
 The workload tends to be high in a matrix organization.
