COMMUNITY
LEARNING OBJECTIVES & COMPETENCIES
 Analyze functions of communities in terms
structures, dynamics, and processes.
HUMSS_CSC12-IIIa-c 5.
 Compare and Contrast typologies of
communities. HUMSS_CSC12-IIIa-c 6.
ELEMENTS
STRUCTURE OF COMMUNITY
Communities may be small, consisting of few species
populations in a small space, or large, comprising several
species populations in a large area. The community structures,
composition and other characteristics can be readily described
by visual observation without actual measurement.

Communities usually categories by the ecologists in various

ways primarily based of habitat features like water availability,
high exposure, or other habitat features.
A community is dynamic since it changes over time. This dynamic
nature is reflected in the succession of organisms in a habitat. A series
of changes results in the development of a relatively stable community,
which maintains its structure and influences the climate of the area.
Such a stable and mature community is called a climax community,
while communities of successional stages are called seral communities.
The plant community structures, composition and other characterizes
can be described in both qualitative or quantitative means.
COMMUNITY BY STRUCTURE

SOCIOPOLITICAL - Social characteristics or individual life
conditions, values, socio-political institutions and process.

ECONOMICS – Social science concerned chiefly with description &
analysis of the production, distribution, & consumption of goods & services.
CULTURAL - A cultural norm codifies
acceptable conduct in society; it serves as a guideline for
behavior, dress, language, and demeanor in a situation,
which serves as a template for expectations in a social
group.
DYNAMICS & PROCESSES
Communities are dynamic systems constantly interacting with
another system, the environment, which is equally dynamic.
The community charges are gradual and imperceptible at any
time but easily recognizable if observed at regular intervals
over a long period of time. Seasonal changes in plant
communities always occur at every place, particularly in areas
where temperature variation is significant.
In course of very long period of time at many places the
communities have reached a peak stage and attained a
dynamic balance with the environmental changes. The pro
cess of change in communities and their environment at one
place in the course of time is called “ecological succession”.
COMMUNITY BY DYNAMICS & PROCESSES

COMMUNITY POWER - Refers to the

direct participation in, ownership of, and sharing of
collective benefits from renewable energy projects, by and
for a local community.
LEADERSHIP - All engagements,
connections, and relationships are based on the challenges
and specific situations that a leader needs to address. But
primary leadership styles are the drivers, with secondary
styles serving as backup.
 RELATIONSHIPS - The product of many
interactive behaviors and happen on different levels. This
includes the words we use, facial expressions and
physiology; meaning how you stand, sit, and carry
yourself.
SOCIAL CHANGE - Social dynamics is
concerned with changes over time and emphasizes
the role of feedbacks. ... In contrast to more
traditional approaches in economics, scholars of
social dynamics are often interested in non-
equilibrium, or dynamic, behavior. That is,
behavior that changes over time.
