Biography
Rabindranath was born on 7 May 1861 Calcutta. His father Debendranath Tagore was a
leading light in the Brahmo Samaj. Rabindranath began writing from an early age and
impressed with his free-flowing style and spontaneous compositions. He mostly rejected
formal schooling; he spent much time being taught at home. In 1878 he travelled to
England and sought to study law at University College, London, but he left before
finishing the degree. After returning to India, in 1901, Tagore moved to Shantiniketan to
found an ashram which became his focal point for writing and his view on schooling. In
1913, Tagore was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature for his work ‘Gitanjali‘ This
made his writings internationally known and his fame spread throughout the world.
Tagore had a great love for nature and many of his poems invoke the simple beauties of
the natural world. For Tagore, his religion could be found in the wonders and mysteries of
nature – as much as in temples and sacred books. Tagore had a great love for nature and

LIFE

At the age of 16, he published his first substantial poetry


under the pseudonym-Bhanusingho [Sun-Lion] and wrote
his first book of short stories and dramas.

His father wanted him to become Barrister and he was sent


to England for this reason.

In 1876, he enrolled at University College, London. But


was called back by his father to return to India in 1880.
FAMOUS POETRIES
Although Tagore wrote successfully in all literary genres, he was first of all a poet.
Among his fifty and odd volumes of poetry, some of them are:

Manasi (1890) [The Ideal One]


Sanar Tari (1894) [The Golden Boat]
Gitanjalo (1910) [Song Offerings]
Gitimalya (1914) [Wreath of Songs]
Balaka (1916) [A Flight of Swans]
AWARDS AND ACHIEVEMENTS

Rabindranath Tagore won Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913.and he was first Indian
to won the Nobel Prize.
In 1930 panitings of Rabindranath Tagore was exhibited in Paris and Landon.
Later in 1930,Rabindranath Tagore wrote oxford during his stay at Birmingham.
Rabindranath Tagore was the co-founder of Dartington hall School in Japan.
Indian postage department showed their tribute to Rabindranath Tagore on 7th may
1961 when a stamp released in the name of Rabindranath Tagore.
