Light

Q1. what is light ?

Q2. can you name any source of light ?
Q3. do you think light make things visible or can
we see through darkness ?
Q4 . Have you ever thought why
burning/combustion always produce light?
Q5 .what do you find when you look above the
sky at midnight ?
Definition of
light :
Light is a form of
electromagnetic
radiations.
‘light’ refers to visible
light.
Sun is the biggest
source of light on
earth.
Have you ever thought
from where Sun gets
this enormous light ?
LUMINOUS
OBJECTS:
• Objects possess
their own light are
called luminous
objects.
•Candles , bulbs ,
sun etc.
Non luminous
objects:
These objects do
not possess any
light.
They can only be
seen when reflect
light from any
luminous object.
Moon , all planets ,
books etc .
Refraction of
light
When light enters
from one medium
to another it
changes its
direction.
Change of direction
or bending of light
rays is called
refraction of light.
APPARENT DEPTH
An object when
placed in a denser
medium when
viewed from rare
medium appears to
be at lesser depth
than its real depth
due to refraction of
light.
Refraction in lenses
Uses of lenses
Use of concave lens Use of convex lens
• Concave lenses are thin in • Convex lenses are thickest
the middle and thick around in the middle and thin
the edge. around the edge.
• Theses lenses spread light • Convex lens is called
rays hence called diverging converging lens because all

correct short sightedness. • Convex lenses are used in
• Are used indoor security magnifying glasses. And in
peepholes . telescopes.
How do lenses work
SPECTRUM
• When white light is
passed through a
triangular prism it is
split into different
colors.
• The continuous spread
of colors is called a
spectrum.
Dispersion

Q. Why light split into different colors ?

Because light is made up of different wavelengths
so every single wavelength is refracted at
different angle this is called dispersion. Different
wavelengths appear as different colors.
• Have you ever thought about how the colors on television screen
are made ?
• Basically there are three main colors red blue and green are called
primary colors.
• When we mix these three colors it produces white light.
• Combination of any two primary colors produces three more
colors i.e. cyan (peacock blue) yellow and magenta.
