GUESS DELICIOUS JUICES

INDICATORS AND ACID

STRENGTH

CLASS VII
MS. Sofia Tariq
ACIDS

 Acids are the solution which contains

hydrogen ions, H+.
ACIDS STRENGTH
 Acids strength depend on the number of
hydrogen ions, H+.
 The stronger the acid, the more hydrogen

ions there are.

 Examples:
 Hydrochloric acid HCl
 Nitric acid HNO3
 Sulphuric acid H2SO4
ACID STRENGTH
PH-SCALE

 PH scale is used to measure acid strength and alkali strength.

 The lower the pH number, the stronger the acid.
 The higher the pH number, the weaker the acid.
PH SCALE AND ACIDS STRENGTH
INDICATORS
 An indicator is a dye that changes color when it is put into an
acid or an alkali.
 Example:
 Litmus is a purple dye which comes from lichens.
 Litmus turn red in acid.
 Litmus turn blue in alkali.
MORE INDICATORS
 PHENOLPHTHALEIN:
 It turn color less in acid.
 It turn pink in alkali.
METHYL ORANGE
 It turn orange in acid.
 It turn yellow in alkali.
UNIVERSAL INDICATOR(PH PAPER)
DAILY LIFE EXAMPLES OF ACIDS
DAILY LIFE EXAMPLES OF
INDICATORS
 Red cabbage juice
 Red grape juice
 Beet root juice
 China rose
STRENGTH VS CONCENTRATION
 Strength means number of hydrogen ions, H+ in an acid.
 Concentration refers to the amount of water in acid.
 Less water means high concentration. Concentrated acid
 More water means less concentration. Dilute acid
 Concentration has no effect on acid strength.

ASSESSMENT-2

 Q.3) The table gives the pH of some substances.

S.NO SUBSTANCE PH
1 Apple 4
2 Coca cola 3
3 Car battery 1
4 Tomato sauce 5
Which of the substance is:
Most acidic? __________________________________________

Least acidic? __________________________________________
HOME WORK
 From internet search five more indicators,
note their colors in acid and alkali in the form
of table.

 Design a colorful and labeled model of pH

scale.
