-Palestine in the ancient world was part of the region
known as Canaan where the Kingdoms of Israel and
Judah were located.(Canaan Mesopotamia)

formerly known as the Canaan as the land of the

Philistines, or “Palestine” and was replaced by Herodotus
in the 5th century.

-It is also known as the Holy Land, the site of the ancient
kingdoms of Israel and Judah.

 Mandate Period
• 1917 Great Britain issued the Boulfour Declaration as the
establishment in Palestine , a national home for the Jewish People.

• The declaration was enthusiastically received by many Jews

worldwide, but was opposed by Palestinian and Arab leaders, who
later claimed that the objective was a breach of promises made to the
Sharif of Mecca in 1915, in exchange for Arab help fighting the
Ottoman Empire during World War I.
• Jordan Covers the majority of the in the land under British mandate .

Pre-monetary Period-Transactions before then were done by
bartering or by paying a predetermined weight of a precious metal,
usually silver.
Started using coins for transactions in the 5th century BCE, with the
Persian conquest of Palestinian lands.
Three of the most common weights were the shekel
(weight)and three thousand shekels equaled one talent- the heaviest
and largest unit of measurement for weight and value in Scripture.
Gerah -the smallest was the , identified in Exodus 30:13 as
1/20 of a shekel (Ezekiel 45:12) and weighed around .571 grams.

• Pound in the time of British mandate 1920, the Ottoman empire
• The Palestine pound was also the currency of Transjordan until
1949 when it was replaced by the Jordanian dinar, and
remained in usage in the West Bank of Jordan until 1950.
• In the Gaza Strip, the Palestine pound continued to circulate
until April 1951, when it was replaced by the Egyptian pound.

• The Roman denarius (plural
denarii) was a little silver
coin which was the imperial
coin of Palestine.
• Meaning it was the most
common form of currency
among the Jews. This Roman
coin was used in Palestine
because of King Herod's rule
over the Jews.

The greek stater was the provincial
coin of Palestine.
• Just like roman coins, greek
staters were usually coined in
gold, silver,copper, or bronze.
• Jewish Shekal
• The local type of coin of the Jews
was the shekal.
• Each coin in Palestine had a
different value and the shekel was
worth the lowest.
