Inverse Functions
Inverse is a function or relation that
undoes the work of another function or
relation. The input of a relation is the
same as the output of its inverse

What is the inverse of f(x)?
 f(x) = {(-3,2), (4, -1), (0, 6), (-1, -3)}

Inverses That Are Functions
 Inverse Function is a function that undoes the
effects of another function. In other words, an
inverse function is an inverse relation that is
also a function.

 f -1(x)
Find the inverse:
f(x) = {(2, 3), (6, 2), (8, 3)}

g(x) = {(2, 3), (6, 2), (8, 5)}

Equations of Inverses
f(x) = 3x – 6

f(x) = 5x - 2
Steps for Finding Inverse
1. Replace the function notation, such as f(x),
with y.
2. Interchange x and y.
3. Solve the resulting equation for y.
4. If the inverse is a function, replace y with the
inverse function notation:
f -1(x)
g(x) = 4x - 1
  f(x) = + 6
Inverse of a Rational Function
Rational Function is a function that is
written in terms of a rational expression.
  h(x) =
  g(x) =
Checking Inverse Functions
To check whether an inverse is correct
Substitute f -1(x) for x in the original function
f(x) and simplify. That is, find f(f -1(x)).
Substitute f(x) for x in the inverse function
f -1(x) and simplify. That is, find f -1(f(x)).
In both cases, the result must be x. If not, the
functions are not inverse.
  Tom says the inverse of f(x) = is f -1(x) = - 6
  Samir says the inverse of f(x) = is f -1(x) = - 6
  f(x) = + 3 and g(x) = 2x - 6

Inverses of Simple Cubic and Cube Root Functions

f(x) =

f(x) = 4x3
  g(x) = + 4
Inverses of Simple Square Root Functions
f(x) =


Cube root function have a range of all R, meaning the domain of the inverse are all R.
However, the square root has a domain of x> 0 and range y > 0.
How will this affect its inverse?

Horizontal Line Test
 A method for testing whether the inverse of a
given graph is a function. If any horizontal
line can be drawn that intersects the graph at
two or more points, then the inverse of the
graph is not a function. If no such line can be
drawn, then the inverse of the graph is a
function.
One-to-One Functions
 A function in which each y-value has a single
x-value mapped to it.
