COURSE
OBJECTIVES
Students may be able to
• understand the classification of different
types of solids
• represent the different orientations of the
solids as a whole and w.r.t. its different parts
• draw orthographic projections of different
solids

3
Solid
• A solid is a three dimensional object having length, breadth and thickness. It is completely
bounded by a surface or surfaces which may be curved or plane.
• A solid is an aggregate of points, lines and planes

Projections of Solids
• A shape of a solid described by drawing its two orthographic views i.e. FV and TV.
• The information that should be known to draw the projection of solid is as follows:
1. Size of the solid
2. orientation of the solid as a whole
3. orientation of the solid w.r.t. one f its base edges, corners, longer edges, slant edges, etc.

Engineering Graphics and Drawing MET-164 7

Orientation of the solid as a whole
• The orientation of the solid can only be determined w.r.t. the axis of the solid
• If the axis is parallel to HP the solid is parallel to HP, similar is the case with perpendicular or
inclined.
1. If the solid is perpendicular to one of the principal planes, the solution of the problem will be
single stage i.e. one FV and TV will be drawn
2. If the solid is inclined to any principal plane it will be a 2 stage solution and follow the below
steps
a. assume the solid to be perpendicular to that principal plane and draw the projections
b. after drawing the above assumed case then draw the projections of the solid inclined to
that principal plane.

Applications
• Projection of solids are used to find out the shape of solid inclined to a plane (E.g. prism,
pyramid, cone & cylinder).
• Projection of solids are also used to find out the front, top and side views of solids.
