Friedrich Jahn
• A German gymnastics educator and nationalist
whose writing is credited with the founding of the
German gymnastics movement as well as
influencing the German Campaign of 1813, during
which a coalition of German states effectively ended
the occupation of Napoleon's First French Empire.

• Rousseau s theory of education emphasized
the importance of expression to produce a
well-balanced, freethinking child. He believed
that if children are allowed to develop
naturally without constraints imposed on them
by society they will develop towards their
fullest potential, both educationally and
morally.

•  Johann Friedrich Simon was
the First Modern Physical
Education teacher; he was a
part of the curriculum at
Johann Basedow's
Philanthropinum in Dessau,
Germany.
• The Philanthropinum was an
experimental school with a
portion of its curriculum
devoted to physical training,
including fencing, horseback
riding, dancing, and ball
games.
Johann Christoph Friedrich Guts-Muths
• Johann Christoph Friedrich Guts-
Muths was a German teacher and
the principal founder of the school
system of gymnastics that was
introduced into schools in
Germany in the 19th century.
Background
Johann Christoph Friedrich Guts-Muths
was born on August 9, 1759 in
Quedlinburg, the son of an ordinary lower-
middle-class family. His father died when
Johann was twelve years old.
• Education
• Guts-Muths was educated at the gymnasium
of Quedlinburg and at Halle University.
Following the new principle of academic
liberty, he studied theology as well as physics,
mathematics, philosophy, and history. He was
especially influenced by a number of lessons
on pedagogical methodology based on the
principles of German educational reformer
Johann Bernhardasedow.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

• Physical education is a course taught


in school that focuses on developing physical
fitness. Effective P.E. classes help kids develop
skill and confidence, maintain physical fitness,
learn about personal health and wellness, and
demonstrate positive social skills
