PROCESS
 AIM OF THE COMMUNICATION PROCESS
 OBJECTIVES OF THE COMMUNICATION PROCESS
COMMUNICATION
• Refers to a two way process of conveying
information, ideas, feelings, or opinions
between two or more persons either verbally
or non verbally using a medium.
COMMUNICATION PROCESS
It can be broken down into eight stages

Sender

Channel Encoding
Cycle
Noise

Feedback Message

Noise

Decoding Channel

Receiver
COMMUNICATION PROCESS : THE SENDER

 Communication starts with an idea or something we want to express which can usually be information and
the person has an idea or information to communicate .
COMMUNICATION PROCESS

The idea is encoded based on their unique perceptions such

as knowledge, attitudes, cultures, feelings, values, past
experiences etc..
Think back to your history classes or football, what does a
group at war or your team do when they don’t want the other
side or group to understand ?
They place that information or team play into code
In other words they “encode the idea”.

COMMUNICATION PROCESS: ENCODING

The idea is encoded based on their unique perceptions such as knowledge, attitudes, cultures,
feelings, values, past experiences.
COMMUNICATION PROCESS: MESSAGE

• The encoded idea is then sent as a message through a channel or medium which can either be face to
face communication, telephone conversation, video calling, letter, email, SMS, facial expressions or body
language.
COMMUNICATION PROCESS:
“THE MESSAGE”
 THIS IS JUST LIKE IN A FOOTBALL GAME, THE RECEIVER IS TO
RECEIVE THE BALL WHICH IN THIS CASE IS THE “MESSAGE”
COMMUNICATION PROCESS : DECODING

• The receiver has to interpret the message

and can also be influenced by the
perceptions I mentioned before with
knowledge and feelings among others.
• This is called decoding
• The sender has to ensure that the receiver understood the message therefore it is the receiver’s job to
convey a message back and this is an essential part of the entire communication process and is called
“FEEDBACK”
• The above is one of the objectives of the communication process.
COMMUNICATION PROCESS: NOISE

• It refers to the influences on effective

communication that influence the
interpretation of conversations for instance a
mixture of a lot of voices called a babble can
distort the interpretation of the message.
COMMUNICATION PROCESS GOES ON AND
ON DEPENDING ON THE LENGTH OF THE
CONVERSATION
AIM OF THE COMMUNICATION PROCESS
• The main aim of the communication process is to
transfer the message CORRECTLY from the sender
to the intended receiver and also the receiver has
to interpret the message correctly as well.
• It also aims to create awareness, imparting
knowledge and projecting an image.
OBJECTIVES OF THE COMMUNICATION
PROCESS
o Informing
o Inquiring
o Persuading
o Expressing emotions
o Entertaining, accepting and building relationships
COMMUNICATION PROCESS OBJECTIVE
:INFORMING
• You are providing information for use in decision making
but aren’t necessarily advocating a course of action.
• For instance, in management you have to convey
information that can be policies, procedures, decisions
etc. , so that the listener will hear, read, understand
what is said, agree and accept the message as well as
react as intended by the manager or sender of the
message.
• A teacher can convey a lesson to his or her students and
with the understanding of communication process its
easier for him or her to communicate with the students.
COMMUNICATION PROCESS OBJECTIVES :
INQUIRY

• Ask for a specific action by the receiver.

• Request for information and assistance or support.
• It can be a visitor asking for directions in an are that is
new to him or her or an investigator that could be
asking for information from witnesses about an
incident or even a student requesting for clarification
on a certain topic.
COMMUNICATION PROCESS OBJECTIVES :
PERSUASION
• To reinforce or change a receiver’s belief about a topic and possibly act on the belief
• For instance a company manager would probably desire to influence or persuade the employee in a way
that will help maintain favorable relationships.
• Also, a mother would persuade her child not cry by communicating with her baby in a persuasive way
for example promising to buy her baby an ice cream.
• A politician can urge his or her audience to vote for him or her.
COMMUNICATION PROCESS OBJECTIVES: EXPRESSING
EMOTIONS

• Communication process ensures

that people are able to express
their emotions, state, feeling
etc..
• One can be able to express his
or her fear, joy, excitement,
amazement, angriness, sickness
and so on through their body
language or facial expressions.
COMMUNICATION PROCESS : ENTERTAINING, ACCEPTING AND BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS

• You usually entertain to amuse or satisfy your audience or listeners.

• Communication process can help us get understood by others as well as being accepted by others basing
on how they have understood us.
• Some messages you send may have the simple goal of building good-will between you and the receiver.
REVIEW
• Communication is a two way process of conveying information, ideas, feelings or opinions between two or
more persons either verbally or non-verbally using a medium or channel.
• The communication process begins with the sender encoding his or her idea, sending the message through a
medium or channel that can be letter, telephone, air, body language or facial expressions; the receiver receives
and decodes the message and conveys a message back which is called feedback and this can be affected by
noise or barriers such as a babble and the message goes back to the sender through a channel or medium thus
the communication process goes on and on until the end of the conversation.
• The aim of the communication process is to ensure the message is delivered correctly from the sender to the
intended receiver.
• Objectives of communication are :
 To inform

The  To inquire
End!!  To persuade
 To express emotions
 To entertain, get accepted and build relationships
