Nursing (Bedside) Clinic
 Organized clinical instruction in the
presence of the patient.
 Bedside clinic can be medical, nursing
or combined.
 This is a teacher centered method
 Meant for a small group of students
 Pre information is required
Contd..
 Prior permission should be taken from
the patient or relatives
 Clinic can be conducted at the
bedside or in the nearby clinical
teaching room.
 Patient selected should have typical
signs and symptoms rather than
unusual or confusing symptoms
 The usual duration is 30 to 45 minutes
 students have to gather around the patient in
an informal way in order to avoid tension to
him
 Patient should be taken into confidence and
nothing should be done or told throughout the
clinic which may humiliate or embarrass him.
 If patient’s condition permits, it is better to
motivate him to give a brief description
regarding his condition.
 The learning experience is essentially
discussion with a focus on
*The total care of the patient,
*Specific nursing care,
*Observations and recorded data
and their implications, the patient
reactions, response to care and
progress.
*The medical and surgical treatment
and consequences
*Nature of nursing care
Nursing Rounds

 Nursing rounds is intended to discuss

briefly the nursing management of all
patents in the ward by sparing few
minutes for each patient
 The ideal duration of nursing rounds
in a ward is 45 minutes and this time
is sufficient to know about 20 to 25
patients
 For successful nursing rounds,
students have to know all patients in
the ward.

 The patents’ dignity has to be

preserved throughout the rounds

 The time of the rounds should be

informed to the students if there is no
stipulated time for daily rounds.
 Demonstration of nursing care by
senior members during the nursing
the nursing rounds will help
students to develop psychomotor
skills and inculcate proper attitude
among them
 By attending nursing rounds, students
are motivated to learn more about the
nursing management of patient in the
ward by referring related literature and
though discussion with experts.

 Moreover, interaction with senior

members promotes team spirit and
professionalism.
Nursing Care Conference
 Nursing care conference has all the
characteristics of the bedside clinic
except the presences of the patient.
When the teacher as well as the
students are well acquainted with the
patient’s features this is the preferred
method.
Group Conference

 A subject of common interest related to

the clinical area is discussed by the
students under the guidance of the
nurse educator.

 This is a small group teaching method.

 Subjects selected for group conference
should have a clinical orientation and
enrich the clinical skills of students.

 Discussion should be based on relevant

information and directed towards
achieving some desirable ends.
 Subjects like
* Nursing management of patients with a particular
disease,
* Common errors likely to be committed by
students in the clinical area,
* Any deficiencies noted in the nursing care
delivery by students, updating of procedures,
* Patient care implications while administrating
drugs,
* Cost-effective use of supplies and equipments,
* Infection control,
* proper waste disposal,
* ward routines,
* interpersonal relationship with patients,
* interpersonal relationship with other health
team members,
* ethical and legal issues related to nursing
care and other genuine topics or issues
identified by students or teacher can be
discussed in the group conference.
 Discussion should be based on relevant
information and directed towards
achieving some desirable ends.
 Students are allowed to participate
actively in the discussion, preferably by
explaining their own experiences in the
clinical area.
 Nursing teacher has to encourage the
students to express their viewpoints and
guide them as needed.
 Group conference helps the students to
develop problem solving skills, team
building skills and the ability to express
oneself assertively.

 By providing an opportunity to express

the innovative ideas and to refine clinical
skills, group conferences make the
clinical area a more interesting place for
teaching and learning.
