BACKGROUND
• Cloud computing is a computing style in which scalable and flexible
IT functionalities are delivered as a service to external customers
using Internet technologies.
•  In 1997, Professor Ramnath defined Cloud Computing as the new
“computing paradigm, where the boundaries of computing will be
determined by economic rationale(reasonable), rather than technical
limits alone.”
• In 1999, Salesforce became a popular example of using Cloud
Computing successfully. They used the idea of using the Internet to
deliver software programs to the end users. The program (or
application) could be accessed and downloaded by anyone with
Internet access.

Background
• Since 2009, the federal government has been shifting its data
storage needs to cloud-based services and away from agency-
owned, in-house data centers.
• This shift is intended to achieve two goals:
1. reduce the total investment by the federal government in information
technology (IT), which currently stands at about $90 billion each
year.
2.  and realize other stated advantages of cloud adoption, including
efficiency, accessibility, collaboration, reliability, and security

CLOUD COMPUTING

• It is use of remote-server(someone is providing us) on

the internet to store, manage and process data rather
than local servers.
• It involves connecting to wide area network(WAN).
• In the simplest terms, cloud computing means storing
and accessing data and programs over the internet
instead of your computer's hard drive.

03/07/2021 6
CHARACTERISTICS
• On-demand self-service: Cloud customers can quickly sign up,
pay for, and start using cloud resources on their own without help
from a sales agent.
• Broad network access: Customers access cloud services via the
internet.
• Resource pooling/Multitenancy: Different types of customers
(individuals, organizations, or different departments within an
organization) all use the same servers, storage, or other computing
resources.

03/07/2021 7
CHARACTERISTICS

• Rapid elasticity or expansion: Cloud customers can

easily scale their use of resources up or down as their
needs change.
• Measured service: Customers pay for the amount of
resources they use in a given period of time rather than
paying for hardware or software upfront.

APPLICATIONS
• Google Drive: This is a pure cloud computing service, with all the storage
found online .Google Drive is also available on more than just desktop
computers; you can use it on tablets like the iPad or on smartphones, which
have separate apps for Docs and Sheets, as well.

• Dropbox: This service has been a simple, reliable and storage service for
years, but is now enhanced with lots of collaboration features enables
individuals to work together to achieve a common business purpose.

• Slack: Yes, it's considered cloud computing if you have a community of

people with separate devices that need instant communication.

DEPLOYMENT MODEL

• There are three types of cloud computing:

I. Private Cloud
II.Public Cloud
III.Hybrid Cloud

03/07/2021 10
03/07/2021 11
PRIVATE CLOUD

• These cloud services used by a single

organization, which are not exposed to the
public.
• A private cloud resides inside the
organization , so only the organization has
access to it and can manage it

03/07/2021 12
PUBLIC CLOUD

• Public clouds are owned and operated by a third-party

cloud service provider who offers services to the general
public.
• With a public cloud, all hardware, software, and other
supporting infrastructure is owned and managed by the
cloud provider. These services are accessed and
managed using a web browser.

03/07/2021 13
HYBRID CLOUD

• The data stored in the public cloud is

usually multi-tenant, which means the data
from multiple organizations is stored in a
shared environment.
• The data stored in private cloud is kept
private by the organization.

03/07/2021 14
ARCHITECTURE
• The Cloud Computing Architecture is the configuration of the system
that involves local and cloud resources, services, middleware and
software, cloud clients and cloud storages, networks, geo-location.
• Note that the Cloud Computing Architecture is based on the needs
of the end-user - the cloud consumer and describes how all these
components are arranged and related.
• For documenting the Cloud Computing Architecture with a goal to
facilitate the communication between stakeholders are successfully
used the Cloud Computing Architecture diagram:

SERVICE MODELS
Cloud computing models are:

03/07/2021 16
Infrastructure as a service.(IaaS)

• Iaas is the most basic category of cloud computing

services. Computer infrastructure such as servers,
storage, and networking are delivered as a service.
• Iaas is popular among enterprises because of the
convenience of having the cloud vendor manage their IT
infrastructure.
• Popular Iaas providers include Amazon Web Services,

03/07/2021 17
Platform as a service.(PaaS)

• Like IaaS, PaaS includes infrastructure—servers,

storage, and networking—but also development tools,
business intelligence (BI) services, database
management systems, and more.
• PaaS is designed to support the complete web
application lifecycle: building, testing, deploying,
managing, and updating
• Popular PaaS vendors include Amazon Web Services

03/07/2021 18
Software as a service.(SaaS)

• Saas is a software delivery method that provides access

to software and its functions remotely as a web-based
service.
• With SaaS, cloud providers host and manage the
software application and underlying infrastructure and
handle the required maintenance.
• SaaS customers pay a recurring (often monthly or
annual) fee to subscribe to the service.
• Popular SaaS vendors include Salesforce, Google G
Suite, Dropbox, and Adobe Creative Cloud.

03/07/2021 19
Limitations

• In cloud computing, the control of the back end infrastructure is

limited to the cloud vendor only.
• Cloud users are also limited to the control and management of their
applications, data and services. This includes data caps, which are
placed on cloud users by the cloud vendor allocating a certain
amount of bandwidth for each customer and are often shared
among other cloud users.
• Privacy and confidentiality are big concerns in some activities. For
instance, sworn translators working under the stipulations of an
NDA, might face problems regarding sensitive data that are not
encrypted.

Emerging trends

 Cloud computing is still a subject of research. A driving factor in the

evolution of cloud computing has been chief technology officers
seeking to minimize risk of internal outages and mitigate the
complexity of housing network and computing hardware in-house.
 Major cloud technology companies invest billions of dollars per year
in cloud Research and Development. For example, in 2011
Microsoft committed 90 percent of its $9.6 billion R&D budget to its
cloud.
  Research by investment bank Centaur Partners in late 2015
forecasted that SaaS revenue would grow from $13.5 billion in 2011
to $32.8 billion in 2016.

CONCLUSION
• In conclusion, cloud computing has some of the benefits that it
provides to businesses, is that it reduces operating cost by spending
less on maintenance and software upgrades and focus more on the
businesses it self.
• But there are other challenges the cloud computing must overcome.
People are very skeptical about whether their data is secure and
private.
• But once, there are standards and regulation worldwide, cloud
computing will revolutionize the future.

ADVANTAGES
While the reason behind why companies decide to use
cloud computing are:
• Convenience
• Scalability
• Low costs
• Security
• Anytime, anywhere access
• High availability
• Flexibility
• Mobility
