Anaerobic Respiration
Get your planners out!
Starter – recap questions
What is the equation for respiration?

Glucose + Oxygen Water + energy

Glucose + energy Carbon dioxide + water

Glucose + oxygen Carbon dioxide + water

What is the purpose of respiration?

To allow you to breathe

To create oxygen

To release energy
Where is the energy stored which is released by
respiration?

In glucose

In the cells

In the blood
Where does respiration occur?

Everywhere

In all living cells

In your lungs
In what part of the cell does respiration occur?

Vacuole

Mitochondria

Cell membrane
When do plants respire?

All day

At night

During daylight
What are the waste products of the respiration
process?

Carbon dioxide and water

Carbon dioxide and water and energy

Carbon dioxide
How does oxygen get to the cells for respiration?

Through arteries

Carried by white blood cells

Carried by red blood cells

By what process does oxygen move into cells?

Diffusion

Dissolving

osmosis
How did you do?

Anaerobic Respiration
Learning Objectives:
State what anaerobic respiration is.

Describe the difference between aerobic and

anaerobic respiration

Explain muscle fatigue and oxygen debt

Lack of Oxygen – Aerobic Respiration

C6H12O6 + 6 O2  6 H2O + 6 CO2 + Energy

“If the body is not able to supply enough oxygen, aerobic

respiration cannot take place and energy is not released!”
But we still need energy!

• The body still has a

supply of glucose.

• The body can harness

some energy from the
glucose without oxygen.

• A by-product called
lactic acid is produced.
Anaerobic
What do you think Anaerobic means?

“Anaerobic = Without Oxygen”

O2
Anaerobic Respiration
• The incomplete breakdown of
glucose.

• Releases less energy than aerobic

respiration.

• Temporary process.
Anaerobic Respiration Equation

Glucose  Lactic Acid + Energy

Where does this occur?
Cells
Why would we get muscle cramps?

Glucose  Lactic Acid + Energy

• Lactic acid is poisonous to

muscles.
• It stops them contracting
and relaxing.
• They become fatigued.
Oxygen debt?
Anaerobic respiration
Glucose  Lactic Acid + Energy

Lactic acid needs to be broken down by oxygen

to allow muscles to return to normal
Lactic acid + oxygen carbon dioxide + water

Hence ‘oxygen debt.’

How are you feeling about all this respiration
stuff?

Totally happy Mostly OK Not confident

Answers

Similarities between aerobic and How is anaerobic respiration different?

anaerobic respiration
Releases energy Anaerobic respiration produces lactic acid

Uses glucose Anaerobic does not require oxygen

Happens in cells It produces less energy

It creates an oxygen debt
