Mascots of the Olympic Games

in
What is an olympic mascot?
The Olympic mascot is a fictional character,
usually an animal native to the area or human
figures, who represent the cultural heritage of
the place where the Olympic and Paralympic
Games are taking place. The mascots are often
used to help market the Olympic Games to a
younger audience, in particular toddlers and
children.
Olympic mascots through history
Since the 1968 Winter
Olympics in Grenoble, France
the Olympic Games have had
a mascot(„Schuss“). The first
major mascot in the Summer
Olympic Games was Misha in
the 1980 Summer Olympics in
Moscow. Starting with the
2010 Vancouver mascots, the
Olympic and Paralympic
mascots have been presented
together.
Wenlock and Mandeville
Wenlock and Mandeville were
the official mascots for the
2012 Summer Olympics and
Paralympics in London, United
Kingdom. They were created
by Iris, a London-based
creative agency. According to
the associated (fictional)
storyline, they were formed
from the last girder of the
Olympic Stadium.
Wenlock’s name is inspired by Much Wenlock in Shropshire,
England, where in 1850 the Wenlock Olympian Society held
its first Olympian Games, regarded as an inspiration for the
modern Olympic games. The five friendship rings on his
wrists correspond to the five Olympic rings, and three points
on his head represent the three places on the podium. The
pattern on his body symbolises the whole world coming to
London, and the shape of his helmet represents the shape of
the Olympic Stadium. Mandeville is named after the Stoke
Mandeville Hospital in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire. In 1948,
Stoke Mandeville organised the first Stoke Mandeville
Games, considered to be the precursor to the Paralympics.
The three spikes on Mandeville's helmet represent the
Paralympic Agito(symbol). He also represents friendship.
Opinions
Mandeville happens to share the name with the 17th century Social
philosopher and Satanist, Bernard Mandeville, who has been quoted saying
“what we call Evil in this World, Moral as well as Natural, is the grand Principle
that makes us sociable Creatures“.
The name Mandeville means "Great Town", which may be used to represent
London, since they are trying to build the New Jerusalem there. Interestingly
enough, the name Man-deville could be read or seen as "man-devil"
Wenlock on the other hand, means "from the holy monastery", which again
goes hand in hand with the new Jerusalem plot. The meanings of both names
placed one next to other would say "from the holy monastery" to the "Great
Town", perhaps making reference to how they plan to move Jerusalem from
the place of the Temple in the real Jerusalem, to England as the New Zion, and
taking a step further, it could be making reference to the invitation the
Illuminati is making to Lucifer, for him to come to rule from earth, specifically
in London, coming from his dimension which to his followers is a temple or
monastery and come to rule from the new Jerusalem, a great town.
Reception
Some say that they are from digital age and that they look good.
However, others were more critical, with one columnist claiming
that the pair were the product of a "drunken one-night stand
between a Teletubby and a Dalek(the characters from the Doctor
Who". Others have compared the mascots to Izzy, the mascot of
the 1996 Summer Olympics, another critically panned mascot.
Still others have remarked that the pair resemble Kang and Kodos
from The Simpsons. However it has been found that children of
the target audience (5 to 15 years) find the duo appealing. Media
critic James Bridle has observed that the characters' huge eyes
make them fitting mascots for London, the most surveilled city on
earth, with the highest ratio of CCTV cameras to inhabitants.
