– Post exposure prevention of tetanus after injury
in patient whose immunization is incomplete or
unknown
 Contra-indication
Contra-indicated in patient with tnrombocyto-penia or other
coagulation disorder that would contra-

Risk
> Use cautiously in patient with history of previous systemic allergic
reaction after giving human immunoglo-bulin preparation and in
those allergic in thimerosal
Mechanism of Action
– Provide passive immunity to tetanus
 Drug to Drug Interaction
Live-virus
Vaccine:
May interfere with response. Postpone
administration of live virus vaccine for 3 months after
giving tetanus immune globulin
Adverse Effect
CNS:
Slight fever
GU:
Nephrotic syndrome
Musculoskeletal:
Stiffness

Erythema at injection site

 Nursing Responsibility
– >Tetanus Immune globulin is used only if wound or patient has had
fewer than two tetanus toxoid injection.
– > Don’t give I.V or I.D don’t give in gluteal area.
– > only administer 250 units deep I.M injection
– > obtain history of injury , tetanus immunization, last tetanus toxoid
injection, allergies and reaction to immunizaton.
