Care- serious attention or consideration applied to
doing something correctly or to avoid damage or
risk.

Maintenance- the process of keeping something in

good condition.
School facilities maintenance is more than
providing the day-to-day building operations. It is
about providing a clean and safe environment for
children and fostering an environment that is
suitable for learning.
SCHOOL
BUILDING
MAINTENANCE
1.    Preventative Maintenance

The care and servicing for the purpose

of maintaining equipment and facilities in
satisfactory operating condition by
providing for systematic inspection,
detection, and correction of incipient
failures either before they occur or before
they develop into major defects.
Common Preventive Maintenance Tasks
• Cleaning
• Painting
• Lubricating
• Replacing Worn Parts
• Lighting Replacement
and Repair
2.    GREEN CLEANING
Chemicals in certain cleaning products can be unsafe and cause
skin, eye or nose irritation. To avoid these health hazards and
protect students, school facility managers should use ‘green’
cleaning products, which are usually low fragrance and have no
volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
3.    PEST CONTROL
Preventing pests from entering the
school is an important part of facility
maintenance. However, strong
pesticides can be a health hazard for
children.

Plans will include treatment for restrooms, cafeterias and other

hot spots to keep pests from entering your building.
PEST CONTROL

• Remove any sources of food, water or shelter.

• Store items in safe and enclosed containers.
• Dispose of garbage regularly with a tightly closed lid.
• Reduce clutter or areas where pests can hide.
• Seal and close off any cracks or holes to eliminate outside entry.
• Perform routine cleaning and surveying from the roof to the
basement floor.
4.    PROPER FLOORING
Believe it or not, the quality of the
flooring installed in your school is an
important part of proper facility
maintenance. A school’s floors receive
heavy traffic from students, teachers and
staff, making it easy for glossy floor
finishes to lose their shine.

Routine scrubbing and recoating of your school’s tile floors is necessary to

ensure they stay scratch and scuff free.
5. roofing

The roof’s job is to protect the school

building from rain, sun, and wind. A
function of the roof is to keep water from
getting into the school building. It is a key
part of the school building’s waterproofing
system, therefore, the roof should be kept
in good shape.
Keeping your school clean isn’t just the
janitor’s job. By helping to keep your school
clean, you’ll begin to take pride in your
school’s appearance, and you’ll gain valuable
experience caring for your environment.
