I. RATIONALE

1. Underlying basis of the project proposal/ reasons why are you proposing?
The current drainage system in the school canteen is inadequate and is not able to adequately manage
wastewater from the kitchen and dining area. This has resulted in frequent flooding, filthy smell,
waterlogging, and contamination of the surrounding environment. This not only affects the health and
well-being of the students and staff, but it also possess a serious risk to the structural integrity of the
school building. The proposed project aims to address this issue by constructing a new and more
effective drainage system for the school canteen. The proposed system will be designed to ensure that
all wastewater is adequately collected, treated, and disposed of in a safe manner. It will also provide
long-term solutions to reduce the risk of flooding and contamination. Additionally, the project will
involve the installation of proper sewage treatment infrastructure, water management systems, and
other related accessories. The new drainage system will not only improve the health and safety of the
students and staff, but it will also help to preserve the structural integrity of the school building. It will
also help to reduce the risk of physical incidents, water-borne and skin diseases, and infestation of pests,
by preventing the contamination of drinking water sources. Finally, the improved drainage system will
reduce the amount of waste being discharged into the environment, helping to protect the local
environment and reduce environmental pollution.
2. The problem – how it can be solved using the project proposal?
3. Why are you proposing?
We are proposing this because the current drainage system in the school canteen is inadequate and is
causing problems such as poor drainage, flooding, filthy smell and a buildup of dirt and debris. This is not
only unsightly, but it can also create a health hazard for the students and staff using the canteen. By
improving the drainage system, we can ensure a clean and healthy environment in the school canteen,
and provide a better experience for everyone who uses it.
4. What are you proposing?
II. BACKGROUND

1. State the problem.

Holy Cross Academy of Tubigon, Inc. Campus, contains several constructed amenities, including the
school canteen and many others. Unfortunately, most of the students had issues with the drainage in
the school canteen because of the foul odor, additionally, there are incidents in the drainage where
students become trapped or suffered injuries. Most of the time during lunch and recess, hundreds of
students fill the school canteen. The canteen's drainage system was constructed in front, where
students might tread on it, and because it was constructed with iron grills, the water waste from the
canteen is visible. The school hasn’t taken any action regarding this problem of the drainage of the
school canteen, students are still struggling to eat in the canteen because of the odor and getting stuck
accidents still happen. Therefore, we made the decision to create a project to aid and alleviate the Holy
Cross Academy of Tubigon Inc. school canteen’s drainage system issue.

2. When or where or how the problem started?

The school build a new canteen just before and during the new academic year began for both students
and faculty. The canteen has five food stands, and all of the sinks and water waste disposal are
connected to a single drainage system. The grade 7 rooms' side, the school kitchen, and the T.L.E. Room
are all connected to the canteen's drainage system. The musty odor steadily fills the canteen as the
months go by, becoming noticeable to students who are eating there. The canteen becomes less secure
as the number of insect flies in the area increases. The food stall owners don't know how to properly
dispose of their water waste, and some students also toss their garbage into the drains because there
was no consistent cleaning and maintenance of it. (e.g. leftover foods, spitting their saliva, dried leaves,
plastics, etc.) . Since the students may foot on the drainage, which causes the drainage's foundation to
deteriorate and the grills to start coming off, which may cause accidents among the students.

3. What are the effects of the problem that we need to address?

A. Waterborne Diseases

Your drainage system's water will contain dangerous germs and pathogens. These germs would multiply
if the blockage was left unattended for a long time, and the sewage water can spread a number of
diseases. These illnesses can be acquired through the consumption of contaminated water or through
contact with unclean hands or other objects. Your stomach and intestines may get infected as a result of
these germs. The signs of a stomach infection can include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal
pain. The most prevalent illnesses that can be spread by water include cholera, typhoid, hepatitis A, and
E Coli infection. If you have a weakened immune system, these infections may even be life-threatening.

B. Allergies and Skin Infections

A filthy drainage system can also result in allergies and skin diseases, which are dangerous. Bacteria and
other germs will be proliferating in the stagnant water in the drains. When exposed to this water, your
skin may become itchy, red, and irritated. It may occasionally cause fungus infections as well. Long-term
neglect of the drainage water can potentially result in more severe skin conditions like cellulitis or
impetigo. High humidity water can also promote the growth of mold spores. Through your mouth or
nostrils, these spores can enter your nose or throat and trigger allergic symptoms including sneezing,
wheezing, nasal congestion, and itchy eyes. Although these allergic reactions could start off minor, they
can later develop into serious consequences.

C. Infestation of Pests

Water won't flow through your drainage system properly if it is obstructed. As a result, it won't be
properly filtered or cleaned, allowing dirt and grime to build up inside of them over time. Insects like
rats, cockroaches, and mosquitoes are drawn to the dirt and grime on these canals and hide there while
searching for food supplies. Additionally, they could transfer germs that could harm the students, faculty
members, and other school staff. For instance, mosquitoes can transmit the Zika virus, dengue disease,
or even malaria. Rats can also spread severe illnesses like Leptospirosis and the bubonic plague.

D. Bad Odor

The drainage in the school may begin to smell foul from the stagnant water, like sewage. This is due to
the fact that sewage and other waste products left inside the canal for an extended period of time will
begin to decompose and release an unpleasant stench. Continuous exposure to a bad odor can lead to
headaches, nausea, and dizziness. Also, in some cases, it can lead to respiratory problems. Moreover,
bad odor makes the canteen inhabitable.

E. Accidents

Students stumble or fall over the canal due to the lack of drainage metal cover slabs in the school
canteen because they skipped a step or other reasons that will lead them to wounded injury and
bruises.

4. What will likely happen if the problem will not be solved?

5. Discuss the significance or reasons why the project needs to be implemented.

III. OBJECTIVES

 The proposal is for the enhancement of both Holy Cross Academy's school and canteen drainage
systems. It focuses on how to improve and guarantee a clean and safe environment for the
student's food bank or what we called the canteen.
 We are proposing this because we observed that the school canteen's drainage system needs
enhancement for the safety of the students, teachers, canteen staff, and as well as the people
who buy food in there.
 The drainage system is a must in every food place to ensure that the foods they are serving are
clean and fresh in order to prevent food poisoning, spoilage, and other food-related incidents,
 And also to avoid any physical incidents (e.g. slipped or stuck) that are caused by the drainage.
 In order to tackle the visible issue that would have guaranteed the quality of the foods and
products offered and sold in our school canteen.
 We intended to attain cleanliness and safety in our learning environment. And we hoped that no
incidents involving the students, instructors, or other members of the school personnel would
be caused by drainage.
 Additionally, we also want all the students to participate, be disciplined, and practice teamwork
by doing the general cleaning operation of this project.
