Parts of Speech

Definition
• Words are divided into eight parts according to the work they do in a sentence. These are called parts of
speech.
1. Noun
2. Pronoun
3. Verb
4. Adjective
5. Adverb
6. Preposition
7. Conjunction
8. Interjection
Noun
• A noun is a word that names a person, place, thing, abstract ideas,
emotions and feelings.
Examples:
• Bilal is studying Material Engineering.
• I live in Lahore.
• I am sitting on a chair.
Pronoun
• Pronoun is a word that is used in place of noun.
Examples:
• Ali is a good boy. He works hard.
• Lahore is the second biggest city of Pakistan. It is the capital of Punjab.
• I, We, You, He, She, It, They are all pronouns.
Verb
• A verb is a word that shows an action or condition (state of being) is
called verb.
Examples:
• He is running fast. (action)
• I am drinking water. (action)
• The cat is dead. (state of being)
Adjective
• A word that adds something into the meaning of a noun is called adjective.
• It tells us something about the noun.
Examples:
• Ahmad is a handsome boy.
• I have a blue bag.
• There are 50 students in this class.
Adverb
• A word that adds something into the meaning of a verb, adjective or
another adverb is called adverb.
Examples:
• He pronounced the word correctly. (verb)
• He pronounced the word quite correctly. (another adverb)
• This flower is very beautiful. (adjective)
Preposition
• A preposition is a word used with a noun or a pronoun to show how the
person or thing denoted by the noun or pronoun stands in relation to
something else.
Examples:
• There is a cow in the garden.
• I have put your book on the table.
• The cat is under the table.
Conjunction
• A word that joins or connects two words, sentences or phrases is called
conjunction.
Examples:
• Two and two makes four.
• Ali like mangoes but I like bananas.
Interjection
• A word that is used to express sudden and strong feelings or strong
emotions.
Examples:
• Hurrah! We won the match.
• Alas! I lost my camera.
• Bravo! You did a good job.
