MUSICAL NOTES AND

SYMBOL
 Musical note and rest values are not absolutely
defined, but are proportional in duration to all other
note and rest values. The whole note is the reference
value, and the other notes are named in comparison;
i.e., a quarter note is a quarter of the length of a whole
note
QUARTER NOTE

 Quarter note have one-

fourth the time value of a
whole note and it has one
beat
QUARTER REST
 Quarter rest is equal in time to a
quarter note. It’s a period of
silence that last for one beat in 4/4
time meaning the duration of one
beat, no note should be played. It
has one fourth the value of a whole
rest.
BEAMED EIGHTH NOTES
 In musical notation, a beam is a horizontal or
diagonal line used to connect multiple
consecutive notes (and occasionally rests) to
indicate rhythmic grouping. Only eighth
notes (quavers) or shorter can be beamed.
The number of beams is equal to the number
of flags that would be present on an
unbeamed note
 A whole note has four beats. A half note has
two beats. A quarter note has one beat. An
eighth note has one half of one beat
