• define demography and list its major areas
Demography
Definition:
• The statistical study of human populations.
• It involves the study of changes that occur over a period of
time in human populations (such as the number of births,
deaths, marriages, and illnesses)
• Population experts are known as demographers.
Origin:
• It is derived from two words:
• - Demos (Greek) means ‘people’
• - Graphia (Latin) means ‘writing or representation in a
specified manner ’

1. Population Dynamics (Change Over time)
2. Population Density (Concentration)
3. Population Distribution (Location)
4. Population Characteristics (Age, gender,
occupation etc.)
