Linear design concept
• Linear movement or force occurs in a straight line rather than in a curve.

• A linear process or development is one in which something changes or progresses straight from one stage to another, and has
a starting point and an end

ADVANTAGE OF LINEAR DESIGN CONCEPT
1. In case of repairs, a very small portion of the distribution area will be affected.
 
2. This system provides free circulation of water through the pipelines. Hence, it is not liable for
pollution due to stagnation of water.

3. The roads in this pattern are relatively easy to construct and maintain  

3. The head loss is minimum.(The pipe head loss is the frictional loss in the hydro pipeline)

4. It provides sufficient supply during fire fighting.

5. In case of fire only a single unit is effected

EGALITARIAN (EQUAL)
• grid is believed to be originated and associated with the idea of democracy, representing an
egalitarian(equal) system of land resource distribution.

• With equal division of land, which had administrative advantages along with systematic and
controlled growth,

• the grid design was a ‘natural’ result of the Greek beliefs and ideologies into practice.
Response to human physiology providing a 90 degree crossing
• street grids and rectilinear blocks, flows (human and
vehicular) intersect only right angles is an important safety
feature.

• It provides a clear and equal viewing angle to the observers

left and right side.

• Less prone to accidents in this system

• Hence, as a response to our innate human physiology, the

grid’s geometry facilitates our easy movement and safety on
streets
ORIENTATION AND WAY FINDING
The very orderly layout fosters a sense of orientation
and way-finding, with numbered streets providing easy
and well facilitated origin-destination situations in
everyday scenarios
CREATING A WALKABLE NEIGHBOURHOODS
• The inner interconnectedness of streets facilitated by
pedestrian friendly elements turns the urban realm to a
walkable and safe neighborhood, facilitated by mixed
use functions
SUSTAINABLE: ABLITY TO
CHANGE
• The grid/LINEAR system has in it the inherent ability
to accommodate land use and functional changes,
constantly and effectively, with blocks and plots of
usually equal size and share, changes can be
plugged in to the existing infrastructure with minimal
difficulties.

• A rectilinear block is the most effective as it allows

for maximum flexibility with the least amount of
surface availability.
BETTER FOR SERVICIBLITY
• The grid layout provides for an easy and orderly
layout of the services in the city, whereby provision
and maintenance is ensured.

• In the ancient civilization of Harappa and Mohenjo-

Daro, it is this very grid iron layout that facilitated

The site has been divided into 3 zones

STREETS
• The streets has been planned in a grid and iron pattern because maintaining a uniform width of 7
m so than each unit or area could get equal amount of accessibility and free movement
PEDESTRIAN
• The pedestrian have peen planned in such a way that it would surround each units with a width of 3 m
• to get a clear view for the drivers in case of a kid runs and crosses the road
• Pedestrian should have enough space in case of a person standing there the pedestrian traffic could me
disturbed and free movement could be done

A SPECIAL LANE FOR DISABLES

The streets are provided with a width of 3M for special lane for
disabled peopled providing tactile paving and handrails
TABLE TOP CROSSING
• the purpose of a tabletop crossing is to reduce vehicle speeds and also
emphasize the presence of the pedestrian crossing.

• warning tiles should be laid wherever there is a pedestrian crossing 

• table top crossing should pe provided at intersection

SETBACK
• Setback of 3 m has been provided for a green belt running
around to enhance the asthetical apperence and lower the
heat effect of each unit so that flowering plants can be
provided to increase heat island effect

Units are a rectangular space measuring 45*47 m in which the sub
unit houses are to planned

SubUnits are housed inside a unit

GREEN SPACES /WATER BODY
• rather than giving a single common space the green spaces
are provided at the centre of each units providing a central
space (courtyard)for activities and architecture uses such as

• and a large comman area is also provided giving space for

extra curricular activities and

WATER BODIES
• Large waterbodies are also provided to reduce the heat island
effect of the complex space by a term called evaporative
cooling
