1. Introduction
Ethylene glycol is an organic compound with the formula (CH2OH)2.
It is an odorless, colorless, sweet-tasting, viscous liquid.

Ethylene glycol is mainly used for two purposes, as a raw

material in the manufacture of polyester fibers and
for antifreeze formulations.
It is identified by some of it properties such as:
+ Molecular weight : 30.3
+ Melting point : - 12.6
+ Boiling point : 197.3
+ Density at 20 : 0.815
2. Sythesis ethylene glycol
2.1. Ethylene glycol is produced from ethylene, via the
intermediate ethylene oxide.
Ethylene oxide reacts with water to produce ethylene glycol according to the
chemical equation :

C2H4O + H2O → HO−CH2CH2−OH

This reation can be catalyzed by either acids or bases, or can occur at
neutral pH under elevated temperatures. The highest yields of ethylene glycol
occur at acidic or neutral pH with a large excess of water .
2. Sythesis ethylene glycol
2.2. Ethylene glycol is produced from carbon monoxide

The oxidative carbonylation of

methanol to dimethyl oxalate to
the production of C1 - based
ethylene glycol.
Dimethyl oxalate can be
converted into ethylene glycol
by hydrogenation with a copper
catalyst in high yields 94.7%
2. Sythesis ethylene glycol

Research on the synthesis of ethylene glycol from carbon monoxide and
hydrogen has been undertaken but yields have been low.

- Temperature 180 - 300°C

- Pressure: 20.000 – 30.000 Psi
- Yield is 65 percent
- Time: 1 - 5 hour

Economically advantageous over the hydrolysis of ethylene oxide which is the

only route in commercial use.
Using water to oxide mole ratio in excess of 20:1  the production of higher
glycols can be minimized.
2. Sythesis ethylene glycol

Monoethylene glycol (MEG) production, according to a process similiar to the Shell OMEGA
process
2. Sythesis ethylene glycol

Manufacturing process of Ethylene Glycol plant (John J. Mcketta Jr)

3. Economic data
Estimated capital expenses (total fixed investment, working capital and initial expenses) to
construct the plant are about $630 million, while the operating expenses are estimated at about
$620/ton of MEG.
The Ethylene Glycol market in the U.S. is estimated at US$8.3 Billion in the year 2020. China, the
world`s second largest economy, is forecast to reach a projected market size of US$7.8
