ILECTURE #1
(Functions of Several Variables)
Dr. Nadeem Alam Khan
Topics to be Covered
• Unit 1.1: Functions of Several Variables-Example
• Unit 1.2: Domain and Range of a Function-Example
• Unit 1.3: Graphs Of Functions of Two Variables-Example
• Unit 1.4: Level Curves-Example
• Unit 1.5: Level Surfaces-Example
LEARNINIG OUTCOMES
After completion my lecture students will be able to:
 Students will be familiar with the basic concept of calculus to
real-valued functions of two, three and several variables.
 After the concept of two and three variables in 2-space and in 3-
space they can be sketched by plotting the intersections with the
coordinate axes and joining them by
the line segment and draw a graph.
 Describe the level curves and how they can draw.
Functions of Several Variables

Definition A function f of two variables, x and y, is a rule that assigns a

unique real number f(x, y) to each point (x, y) in some set D in the xy-plane.
Definition A function f of three variables, x, y, and z, is a rule that assigns
a unique real number f(x, y, z) to each point (x, y, z) in some set D in three
dimensional space.
