PROTISTS

BY: HARRISON DEMPSEY

PLANT LIKE PROTIST - ALGAE

• Scientific Name- Phycophyta

• Description- Algae does not consume organic

materials; instead, it feeds on the waste materials
produced by decomposing materials and the waste
of marine animals. Algae moves around using its
Flagella. Algae reproduce by sexual reproduction,
involving male and female gametes, by asexual
reproduction through binary fission, or by both
ways.
FUNGUS LIKE PROTIST - MOLD

• Scientific Name- Aspergillus

• Description-mold feeds itself by producing
chemicals that make the food break down
and start to rot. mold is carried(moved and
reproduced) through the air, into heating
ducts, on clothing and even on the fur of
the family pet. Mold growing on any
surface in the home will release
additional mold spores that will then travel
to other areas of the house
CILIOPHORAN - SUCTORIA

• Scientific Name- Ciliophora

• Description- Suctoria feed by extracellular
digestion. Suctorians are ciliates, which
means they have short hair-like structures
called cilia all over their cell membrane.
Cilia can help young
Suctorians move through their environments.
Suctoria reproduce primarily by budding,
producing swarmers that lack both tentacles
and stalks but have cilia. They may
also reproduce through conjugation.
ZOOFLAGELLATE - DIPLOMONAD

• Scientific Name- Diplomonadida

• Description- Diplomonads can ferment
sugars such as glucose to produce energy,
and they are also capable of fermenting the
amino acid arginine as a means of
obtaining energy. Each diplomonad cell
has two identical nuclei and uses several
flagella for locomotion. Diplomonads are
generally considered to replicate only
asexually, by simple binary fission
SARCODINIAN - HELIOZOA

• Scientific Name-Heliozoan
• Description- Heliozoans ingest
protozoans, algae, and other small
organisms for energy.
Some Heliozoa traverse the bottom
with a unique tumbling motion
resulting from controlled changes in
the length of the axopods for
movement. They reproduce asexually
by binary fission or by budding.
SPOROZOAN - COCCIDIA

• Scientific Name- Coccidiosis

• Description- The life cycle of these parasites involves the ingestion of
sporulated oocysts containing sporozoites. Sporozoites are what help feed the
protist. The disease spreads from one animal to another by contact with infected
feces or ingestion of infected tissue. The cell also uses sporozoites to reproduce.
