1) Subject + Intransitive Verb (S + IV)
2) Subject + Transitive Verb + Direct Object

GLOSSARY OF SENTENCE PATTERNS
 SUBJECT- what or whom the sentence is about (either a noun
or a pronoun
 INTRANSITIVE VERB- an action verb that never has a direct or
indirect object
 TRANSITIVE VERB- an action verb that always has a noun that
receives its action
 DIRECT OBJECT- receives the action of a transitive verb
(answers the question what?)
 INDIRECT OBJECT- the object to whom or for whom the action
that was done.
 OBJECT COMPLEMENT- always follows the direct object and
either renames or describes the direct object
 SUBJECT COMPLEMENT- a noun or pronoun that follows a
functioning linking verb
1) S + IV
EXAMPLES:

After the night-out, the college students celebrated in


the drinking bar.

Lance grooves on the slippery dancefloor.

The telephone rings loudly.


2) S + TV + DO
EXAMPLES:

Annie allocates a budget on miscellaneous expenses.

The talented creative staff earns her first promotion.

The young girl pushes a wheelbarrow of hay along the way.


3) S + TV + IO + DO
EXAMPLES:

I wrote my Canadian boyfriend a lyrical poem.

James sent Clay a box of macaroons last week.

Clay taught her niece a new nature poem.


4) S + TV + DO + OC
EXAMPLES:

Askin selected Chan creative assistant for the said project.

The president named the newfound puppy Baxter.

Caitlin painted the two-year old duplex cyan.


5) S + LV + C
EXAMPLES:

The French fries on the table appear stale.

Jensen Ackles is the newly elected council president.

The casserole on the wooden table appears delectable.
