1) Subject + Intransitive Verb (S + IV)
2) Subject + Transitive Verb + Direct Object
(S + TV + DO)
3) Subject + Transitive Verb + Indirect Object +
Direct Object
(S + TV + IO + DO)
4) Subject + Transitive Verb + Direct Object +
Object Complement (S + TV + DO + OC)

GLOSSARY OF SENTENCE PATTERNS
SUBJECT- what or whom the sentence is about (either a noun
or a pronoun
INTRANSITIVE VERB- an action verb that never has a direct or
indirect object
TRANSITIVE VERB- an action verb that always has a noun that
receives its action
DIRECT OBJECT- receives the action of a transitive verb
(answers the question what?)
INDIRECT OBJECT- the object to whom or for whom the action
that was done.
OBJECT COMPLEMENT- always follows the direct object and
either renames or describes the direct object
SUBJECT COMPLEMENT- a noun or pronoun that follows a
functioning linking verb
