Simple Past Tense


1. It indicates that an activity or situation began and ended at a particular
time in the past.
 I walked to school yesterday.
 He lived in Paris for ten years.
 I bought a new car three days ago.
 She put her books on the table last week.
2.If a sentence contains when and has the simple past in
both clauses, the action in the “when clause” happens
first.
 I stood under a tree when it began to rain.
 When she heard a strange noise, she got up to investigate.
 When I dropped my cup, the coffee spilled on my lap.

Past Continuous Tense


1. It indicates two actions occurred at the same time, but one action
began earlier and was in progress when the other action occurred.
 I was walking down the street when it began to
rain.
 While I was walking down the street, it began to
rain.
 I was standing under a tree when it began to rain.
2. It indicates an action began in the past and was in progress at that
time, and probably continued.
 At eight o’clock last night, I was studying.
 Last year at this time, my son was attending school.

Past Continuous Tense


3. Sometimes it is used in both parts of a sentence
when two actions are in progress simultaneously.
 While I was studying in one room of our
apartment, my roommate was having a party in
the other room.
 When the students were listening to music, their
teacher was writing the quiz.
