ABSTRACT

Sheet metal parts are widely used in the assembly. The most common method of
assembling sheet metal parts is through riveting. For riveting purpose initially we
use a drilling machine to make holes which is operated manually. For normal
height the holes can be drilled easily by human. But for higher levels we
generally have to use ladders or cranes. This process is time consuming and also
there will be chances of accidents. In this project, we will design and
manufacture such a mechanism that it will be used at different levels by using a
criss-cross mechanism also called as the scissor mechanism. The scissor
mechanism will be operated by DC motors. And the tailstock movement in X-Y
direction will be controlled with the help of lead screw.
INTRODUCTION

A scissor lift or mechanism is a device used to extend or

position a platform by mechanical means. The term “scissor”
comes from the mechanic which has folding supports in criss
cross “X” pattern, which is known as Pantograph.
The force applied to extend the scissors mechanism may by
hydraulic, pneumatic or mechanical (via a lead screw
mechanism). The need for the use of lift is very paramount and
it runs across: Labs, Workshops, Residential/Commercial
buildings to repair street lights, Fixing of bill boards, electric
bulbs etc.

PROBLEM
STATEMENT

 In Industrial applications rivet joints is used to attach two plates.

For that initially we have to drill hole.

 Sometimes the structure may be huge at that time man power

required for drillings holes will be more and it is time consuming.

 It results decrease in productivity.

PROBLEM STATEMENT
Need of The Project

 Industrial Portable drilling machine can be move

from one place to another place so, it is easy to
drill the holes to pump which are at various
locations. Due to that time required for this
operation is reduced, material handling & labor
work reduces, reduces cost. Hence overall result
is productivity increases.
Objectives

1. Reduce time required for drill steady pin hole on boring

machine.
2. Avoid material handling by special purpose cranes.
3. To reduce man power.
4. Design of a versatile portable machine which can also use for
drilling operation on group one to five pumps.
5. To increase productivity.
6. To form an efficient process to improve quality of pump.
7. It will reduce wear and tear of pump due to material handling.

Scope

1. Portable drilling machine is versatile in operation able to drill

hole on varies group of pump with different materials.
2. It is simple in construction and light weight machine compare
to other conventional drilling machine.
3. It has three degree of freedom, in future can be operated with
help of servo motors. (example- longitudinal feed will be
given with help of drive.)
4. Automation of drilling machine can be possible in future,
CNC version of portable drilling machine.
