…and is essential for communicating and

participating in a professional
community.
z
Ethical behavior is a foundation of academic work.

Ethics:
Standards of
conduct or
behavior that
distinguish what is
or is not
acceptable.
z

What is academic
integrity?
z
Academic integrity refers to
the honest and ethical manner
in which academic work is done,
whether it is an assignment, an
examination, an oral
presentation, or a research
project or report.

It is a fundamental value that

all faculty and students are
expected to uphold.
Elements of Academic Integrity
z
Some forms of academic misconduct include:
z

• Cheating
e.g. copying from unauthorised materials
during an exam

This might be
• Plagiarism new to you
i.e. using others’ words or ideas as one’s
own without due acknowledgement
Some forms of academic misconduct include (cont’d):
z

• Falsification & fabrication

e.g. making up research data or editing experiment
results to make one’s work look more favourable

• Aiding academic dishonesty

e.g. writing an assignment for a classmate

• Unpermitted collaboration or help

e.g. asking someone to write or rewrite your essay
for you
z
Some forms of academic misconduct include (cont’d):

 Impersonation:

Assuming another student’s identity in order to give that

person an advantage or allowing another student to assume your
identity (e.g. sitting an exam under another person’s name, or
allowing another person to sit an exam for you).

 Duplication:

Using previously assessed work for more than one

assessment task.
z

Why is it important to
ensure academic integrity
in our work?
z
Reason #1
Doing honest work allows us to learn to think for
ourselves and get the most out of our learning.

Reason #2

We want to learn in a fair and honest environment (it is

not fair to others if a student gets a better grade by
cheating).
Let’s do it
fair and square!
z
Reason #3
We need to respect and follow the code of practice
in the academia and the profession in which we are
engaged.

For example, if we use other people’s ideas or words

without acknowledging the source, we will infringe on
their intellectual property rights.

z Reason #4

Upholding integrity in our work enhances our credibility as

reliable and honest members of the community – a
desirable quality employers seek after in employees.

It also protects the reputation of the Institutiony and our

fellow students.

Thank you.
students always do
honest work. I’d like to
hire you!
z

What are the

consequences of
violating academic
integrity?
What are the consequences of plagiarism?
z Depending on the seriousness, different disciplinary
actions will be taken.
• In College or a University:
• Counseling & advisement
• A low grade
• Suspension or expulsion
• Retraction of published work
• At Work:
• Disciplinary Action
• Job Loss
• Damaged Reputation
• Lawsuits (and expensive, at that!)

In both settings, plagiarism may compromise the

integrity and veracity of later works that may
(inadvertently) use plagiarized work.
z Technology and Plagiarism

“Technology didn’t cause

cheating, it only made it easier.”
z
Technology and Plagiarism

Students have easy access to technology that enables them to plagiarise

through:

instant messaging
social media
websites
writers for hire online
digital photography
wireless internet (especially on cellphones)
cutting and pasting…from almost anywhere

About Plagiarism and How to Avoid It: Hot Tips for
Students
• Electronic plagiarism prevention and detection tools:
Turnitin & SafeAssign, Shodh Shuddhi (Ouriginal)
z

“Turnitin” &
“SafeAssign”?
Shodhshuddhi
(Ouriginal) Indian
What are they?
z

• They are online plagiarism prevention and

detection tools.

• These electronic tools can detect plagiarism in

a piece of work.

• You may be required by your subject teacher

to submit your work to these systems for
checking potential or suspected plagiarism.
z
z Here’s how these systems work:
1. You submit your work to the detection system (Turnitin/ SafeAssign)

2. Your work is compared to billions of sources and referenced materials including

websites, professional publications, student essay cheat sites and other student work
including that of your classmates.

3. An originality report is made on every piece of submitted work. Any text matches
found in the detection system’s databases are highlighted and linked to the sources.

4. Your teacher can review the originality report and determine if plagiarism has
occurred or not.
How to Avoid Plagiarism
z

1. ALWAYS CITE SOURCES. It’s better to

over-cite than the opposite.
o Example: In 2013, the population of Miami was
2,617,136 (U.S. Census Bureau).

2. CORRECTLY USE A CITATION STYLE, AS DEFINED BY THE

MOST CURRENT EDITION OF A STYLE GUIDE.
Commonly Used Guides:
o Publication Manual of the American
Psychological Association (APA)
o MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers (MLA)
o The Chicago Manual of Style

3. MAINTAIN A THOROUGH BIBLIOGRAPHY OR

REFERENCE LIST OF ALL SOURCES USED.

4. COMMUNICATE WITH PROJECT

COLLEAGUES OR CO-AUTHORS.
o Discuss your interest in using the work
done by the group.
o Give credit for using their work.
o Express concerns of plagiarism.

5. PROPER PARAPHRASING:
Read carefully through what you
intend to paraphrase, then rewrite
the idea in your own words without
using the original work as a guide.

Also, check your paraphrase

against the original text to be sure
you have not unintentionally used
the same phrases or words, and
that the information is correct.
z How to Avoid Plagiarism

6. DO NOT COPY AND PASTE unless you do ALL of the

following:
• Cite your sources and provide
proper acknowledgement.
• Use your style guide’s format for copied
information (use quotations, indentations, or
whatever it dictates); AND
• Use the copied information to

X
support your point or argument by
connecting it with your own
statement(s) of why it supports it.

7. GIVE YOURSELF ENOUGH

TIME TO WORK ON YOUR
ASSIGNMENT:
Plagiarism is often done
when someone is rushed
and copies work just to get
something finished.
Choosing a topic, finding information, and writing
takes time, so plan accordingly!
