• Isolation of carvone by preparative gas chromatography

• Two anantiomers
• + (carvone) - (carvone)
• +carvone isolated from caraway seed oil and – carvone from spearmint oil, by using Gas
chromatography.
• + carvone and – carvone anantiomers have odors distinctly different from each other.
• With the exception of of their optical rotation, the physical properties of anantiomers are
identical.
.Caraway seed oil: contains lager
amount of limonene and + carvone.
.Spearmint oil:
Contains smaller amount of limonene
and –carvone.
• Procedure:
• Inject 50-mL of caraway-seeds or spearmint oil onto the gas chromatography column.
• Just before a component of oil (limonene or carvone) elutes from column, install a gas
collection tube at the exit port.
Should connect the gas collection tube just before limonene or
carvone elutes from column and remove the tube as soon as all the
component has been collected, but before any other compound
begins to elute from the column.

. This procedure is relatively easy for collection carvone component

of both oils. Because of the presence of several terpenes in spearmint
oil, create difficulty to isolate pure sample of limonene from
spearmint oil.
. Should must try to collect only the pure component..
Anaylsis of peaks, isolate the pure carvone.
After collecting the sample, detect the sample through recorder which shows peaks.
