MODERN

ART
• It includes artistic works produced during the period
extending roughly from 1860’s to the 1970’s.
• Modernism in painting first started with the Frenchman
Edouard Manet.
Academic art
• was established in 1648 by Academie Royale de
Peintureet de Scupture in Paris.
• Artist who took ideas heart were known as REALISTS.
• They include Honore Daumier and two painters whose work
stands on the threshold of the Impessionist movement:
Gustave Courbet and Eduoard Manet.
REALISM
• Is a nineteenth century style characterized by accurate and
truthful portrayal of subject matter.

IMPRESSIONISM
• It is a late nineteenth-centuty style, principally in France.
• Claude Monet – is the most fervent follower of Impressionist
techniques.

POINTILLISM, after his application of pigment in small dabs.
EXPRESSIONISM
• Is any art that stresses the artist’s emotional and psychological
expression, often with bold colors and distortion of form.
• George Munch - who adopted expressionist painting of
Gauguin.

CUBISM
• Is a style of art pioneered in the late 20th century by Pablo
Picasso and Georges Braque.
• Pablo Picasso is perhaps the most significant artist in 20 th
century.
• Picasso’s first major artistic phase has ben called Blue Period.
• Analytic cubism reached the peak of its expression in 1911.
• Georges Braque graduated from Impressionism to Fauvism.
• He met Picasso in 1907 and from then until about 1914 the
artist work together toward the same artistic goals.
• DADA – is a move emerged during world war 1 in Europe that
purported to be anti-everything, even anti-art.
• Daddaism is a protest against the horrors of world war 1.
SURREALISM
• Is a movement in the early 20th century that emphasized
imagery from dreams and fantasies.

• Salvador Dali – one of the artist who belong to a leading
surrealist figure.

Abstract Realism
• Abstract realism – is an that sits between abstraction and
realism.
• Abstract is an art that doesn’t have a definable focus.
3 leaders of abstract realism
• Jackson Pollock – worked in several forms of media, including
print and film.
• Franz Kline – used wide, strong strokes of paint across an
entire canvas and created extremely abstract paintings.
• William De Kooning – was an abstract realist in the more literal
sense. One of his paints is “Woman and a bicycle”.
