SELECTION OF ECO-FRIENDLY

MATERIALS ,
ITS CONSTRUCTION
DEFINITION :
Environmentally-friendly building materials are those that provide appropriate
service and life span, with minimum maintenance, while minimizing the extraction
of raw materials, the pollution from, and energy consumed by manufacturing and
use, and that have the maximum potential for reuse or resource recovery.

MATERIAL SELECTION CRITERIA :

• Critical performance criteria required of the material to be selected.

• Appropriate environmental product information, as noted in the "Tools and
Resources" section above.
• Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for all products for which they are available.
MSDSs can be useful in evaluating the potential hazards associated with the
installation, use, and disposal of many products.
• Maintenance expectations for the material or system.
• Corporate environmental policy statements for the manufacturers under
consideration.

RAMMED EARTH
Rammed earth walls are constructed by ramming a mixture of selected aggregates,
including gravel, sand, silt and a small amount of clay, into place between flat
panels called formwork.
ADVANTAGES :
 Structural capability :
Rammed earth is very strong in compression and can be used for multi-storey load
bearing construction.
 Thermal mass :
The external walls of our rammed earth buildings are a minimum of 300mm (1 ft)
thick, providing excellent protection from extremes in climate.
 Noise Reduction
The thickness and density of the walls mean that noise transmission is very much
reduced.
 Fire Proof
A 150mm earth block wall achieved a rating of 3 hrs 41 minutes. Our walls are
stronger, being 300mm thick and of monolithic rather than block construction
 Strong and Durable
As CSIRO research has proved, rammed earth is extremely durable and weather
CONSTRUCTION METHOD :
FLOORING
BAMBOO
Bamboo is a natural surface covering material that has many of the properties of
hardwood flooring, even though it is actually produced from a type of grass.
BENEFITS
• Water Resistant : This material is slightly more resistant to water damage, stains,
and warping than hardwood materials, although it is still a concern.
• Durability: There are certain types of bamboo that can be extremely strong, hard,
and durable.
• Easy Maintenance :Bamboo is relatively easy to maintain. You just have to sweep
or vacuum it regularly to remove small particle debris.
• Style: Bamboo is a trendy flooring material that can elevate the elegance of a
space almost instantly.
DRAWBACKS :
• Humidity: If the floor is installed in a very humid area, the moisture in the air can
cause t
• Emission of VOC’s: Bamboo floor planks are manufactured by slicing or shredding
the stalk of the bamboo grass plant and then adhering the pieces back together
using heat, pressure, and a resin-based adhesive. he floor planks to plump. In a dry
environment, the planks can shrink.
BAMBOO FLOORING METHODS
Nailing
Once the boards are in place, they can be nailed
using a pneumatic flooring nail gun. The nail gun
should be aligned at an angle before releasing to
make sure that nails will not be visible.
Gluing:
Flooring can also be glued with a special
moisture resistant adhesive. This method works
best when the board is installed in small sections
and snapped together tightly.
STRUCTURAL
STRAW BALE CONSTRUCTION :

Straw-bale construction is a building method that uses bales of straw (commonly

wheat, rice, rye and oats straw) as structural elements on walls and covered by
earthen or lime stucco.
BENEFITS
• Straw bale construction is affordable
• Straw bale walls are very well insulated, when built correctly can have an  R-Value
between 40 and 60, depending on the thickness of the wall.
• Straw bale homes are more fire retardant than traditional stick-framed homes.
• Straw bales are an agricultural by-product
• Stacking bales can be incredibly fast and easy.
DRAWBACKS
• Chances of attack by insects and mold.
•  If the bales aren’t stacked properly, there can be small gaps in the walls that
create thermal break-points in the otherwise well insulated walls.
• Plaster is the crucial point of the construction process, and is often done poorly.
• Working with can cause skin irritation.
