 HISTORY
It is about the past of
mankind scientifically
investigated to acquire
knowledge about stories of
human experience
History
 Comes from the Greek word Historia which
means learning, inquiry and/or investigation.
 It is a scientific discipline which deals with
the study of significant events in the past in
order to ascertain the truth.
 This includes records or accounts usually
written in sequential arrangement of the
past events especially those concerning a
particular nation people or field of
knowledge as well as activities.
 History is considered to be scientific disciplined because it
uses the tools of science in finding out what really transpired in the
past. There are two ways of presenting historical phenomenon:

1. Pre-historic past -refers to that time before man

invented writing. Historians rely on physical
evidence like skeletal remains, fossils and artifacts
to ascertain what really transpired during this period
2. Historic past -refers to the period where events are
recorded through written documents. This period of
the past may be divided into four phases: Ancient
past, Medieval Past or Middle Ages, Modern period
and Post-modern(contemporary history and recent
history
As a discipline primarily interested in the study of
past events of human beings, history often been
shaped by certain forces like civilization, economy,
education, geography, humanities, politics, religion
and war
All histories(except pre-history) are written in one
way or the other, meaning committed to a document
or documented. It works have to do with the thought
and action of men and women who lived in past
times. They explore and dig up information on what
men and women did and thought in the past.
Historian’s business is to discover and to furnish the
facts of history
Historical facts is a collection of
historical thesis taken collectively
Historical knowledge -the body of
historical facts when taken together
as one. It is considered to be truth
when nobody question its integrity
or veracity. If not it reverts back to
historical propositions
 Five Sources of Historical Facts
1. Written sources –everything that is written, for example:
accounts, books, bulletins, contracts, diaries, journals,
newspapers, periodicals, testaments, wills and others
2. Orally transmitted materials –everything that is unwritten and
passed through word of mouth such as balagtasan, folklore,
folksong, kwentong bayan, myths, pabula, tula and others
3. Artistic production –these are historical carvings, engravings,
paintings, portraits, sketches, vases, women tapestries and
the like
4. Electronic data –everything produced through the use of
energy like computer data, documentaries, films, radio,
television and others
5. Relics and remains. This include artifacts, bones, bridges,
buildings, fossils, language, potteries, roads, trails, vases and
others.

 Branches of History
 Cultural history- is a little bit like social
history, but it focuses on the broader
history of culture.
 Military history- speaks for itself. It is
the history of military conflict.
 Economic history- emphasizes the role
of economics as decisive force in
historical cause and effect.
