Contextualization of History

Activity 1
1. What is history? How is your understanding of history different from what is explained in
this lesson?
- History is known as the study of past events such as action, people, discovery, or
collection. History narrates memories to aware people nowadays what happened before
today. History’s primary purpose is to stand at the center of a diverse, tolerant,
intellectual about our existence like our society, economy, and culture. It also a part to
shape the identity we have today.

2. What does a historian do? As a student of history, what do you think will be your
“duties”?
- A historian has a job such as studying and interpreting the past. They have a process
called the historical method, where they collect and evaluate information from many
primary sources to answer questions about historical events. They analyze written
records, physical artifacts, and any evidence for their investigations.

- As a student of history, I will give importance to my country's culture as a part of


history by applying and sharing it with others like saying 'po' and 'opo', and kissing the
hands of the elderly. By these things, I can show my love to my country. As this culture
came from our ancestors who lived in the past and passed it to our generation.

3. What is the main distinction between primary source and secondary source?
- Primary source are information which are the closest to the main point of history. These
information are records of events by individuals who mainly experienced the event. It can
be in the form correspondence, diaries, memoirs, artifacts, and personal histories which
are raw information of history. On the other hand;
- Secondary source are the analysis and restatements of the primary source. They are the
interpretation of the primary source that can be in the form of textbooks, articles, and
reference books. Unlike the primary source, secondary source is a manufactured
information which are the result of interpretations of the primary source.

4. Why is primary source important in the study of history?


- Primary source is important in the study of history as it lets researchers become closer
and give deeper understanding of history. It helps us become personally attached to the
history. Moreover, primary sources are like fragments of history which are important in
solving its mystery.
Activity 2
Guide Question: On the basis of Ambeth Ocampo's definition of history, there are two
components involve and they are: 
1. Kasaysasan/salaysay
2. Saysay
Question:  Write a brief history (Kasaysayan/narration of events)  of Baliuag University and cite
examples on its meaningful existence (Saysay) as an educational institution. (write it with at least
100 words). 
Baliuag University, a well-known university in Baliuag, Bulacan, started as a small high
school with only 75 students enrolled. The school operated as a high school from 1925 until
1941. The Japanese occupation forced the school to close down and stop.
Years later, the school re-opened and started to offer more courses. Due to it, the
government promoted the school from being an institute into a junior college school. With
continuing success, the school later became Baliuag Colleges in 1968.
With the continuing growth, the Commission on Higher Education declared Baliuag
Colleges as a university. It was named Baliuag University in the year 2001 and continued its
service up to the present day.
The school has contributed a lot for the benefit of many. It gives quality education, and
students who graduated from this university became successful. The school also offers
scholarships to students who cannot afford to study in college. It helped students to pursue their
dreams and achieve their goals.
Baliuag University also organizes different events like training, seminars, and
orientations, which are beneficial for its students. They also teach compassion to students by
organizing donation activities for those affected by calamities.
Through the years, the school remained true to its vision and mission and build quality
education that will lead to a better future.
