Charge air system

• The main function of the external charge air system is to provide the
engine with:
– Clean air
– Dry air
e.g. Charge air quality requirement for 6L21/31,MAN,1000rpm,1.2MW engine:

• Not actually a filter
• Combined silencer and mesh
• Function is related to surrounding air quality
→ Process ventilation system is important
→ Higher electric power consumption
• High pressure drop (even 2000 Pa)

Weather Hood
• Another way to protect
the engine from dust or
wet air or the filters
from being clogged
• Opening to be sized so
the airflow speed does
not exceed 1 m/s and
the airflow enters the
hood vertically upwards.
