LESSON 3 : Divisibility

Rules
Divisible By

• "Divisible By" means "when you divide one number by another the
result is a whole number"
• Examples:
• 14 is divisible by 7, because 14 ÷ 7 = 2 exactly
• 15 is not divisible by 7, because 15 ÷ 7 = 2 17 (the result is not a
whole number)
• 0 is divisible by 7, because 0 ÷ 7 = 0 exactly (0 is a whole number)
FACT:
• "Divisible by" and "can be exactly divided by" mean the same thing
The Divisibility Rules

• These rules let you test if one number is divisible by another, without
having to do too much calculation!
• Example: is 723 divisible by 3?
• We could try dividing 723 by 3
• Or use the "3" rule: 7+2+3=12, and 12 ÷ 3 = 4 exactly  Yes
• Note: Zero is divisible by any number (except by itself),
DIVISIBILITY RULES OF 2

• A number is divisible by 2 if the number ends in 0,2,4,6 and 8.

• Example: 24, 872, 500, 1 118, 9 866
TRY THIS
288 ÷ 2 =
• Is 288 divisible by 2?
1205 ÷ 2 =
• Is 1205 divisible by 2?
4008 ÷ 2 =
• Is 4008 divisible by 2?
Divisibility Rule of 5

• A number is divisible by 5 if the number ends in 0 and 5.

• Example: 25, 500, 1 085, 16 700

TRY THIS
455 ÷ 5 =
• Is 455 divisible by 5?
1205 ÷ 5 =
• Is 1205 divisible by 5?
4000 ÷ 5 =
• Is 4000 divisible by 5?
Divisibility Rule of 10

• A number is divisible by 10 if the number ends in 0.

• Example: 30, 500, 18 000, 16 700

TRY THIS
4022 ÷ 10 =
• Is 4022 divisible by 10?
1300 ÷ 10 =
• Is 1300 divisible by 10?
5000 ÷ 10 =
• Is 5000 divisible by 10?
Factors Can Be Useful
Factors are the numbers you multiply to get another
number:

Jaira has 70 collected stamps. Can she shared that
equally to 2 friends? 5 Friends? 10 friends?
To solve the problem, you need to know if 2 5 and 10
are factors of 70 or if 70 is divisible by 2 5 and 10.
To see if the number is divisible by 2, 5 or 10 ,test by
checking the ones digit
DIVISIBILITY TEST 70
By 2: Is the ones digit 0,2,4,6 or YES
8?
By 5: Is the ones digit 0 or 5? YES
By 10: Is the ones digit 0? YES

LET US SOLVE
• On a certain bakery, there were 230 monay breads to be placed on trays.
The baker wants to arrange them in either 2, 5 or 10 rows. Would it be
possible for him to arrange the breads?

• How many monay breads were in the bakery?

• What does the problem asked you to find? How
• will you find the answer to the problem?

rules for divisibility.

Summarizing the Lesson
How do we find the factors of a number using divisibility rules?
• We recall and apply the rules on divisibility for 2, 5 and 10.
 Divisibility rule for 2
All even nos. are divisible by 2
 Divisibility rule for 5
Numbers ending in 0 and 5 are divisible by 5
 Divisibility rule for 10
Numbers ending in 0 are divisible by 10
