‫הלל‬

ָ ‫ הֱ וֵי ִמ ַּתלְ ִמ‬,‫אֹומר‬

,‫ידיו ׁשֶ ל ַאהֲ ר ֹן‬ ֵ ‫ ִה ֵּלל‬.‫ִה ֵּלל ו ְַׁש ַּמאי ִקּבְלּו ֵמהֶ ם‬
ָ ‫אֹוהב אֶ ת ַהּב ְִרּיֹות ּומְ ָק ְרבָן ַל‬
‫ּתֹורה‬ ֵ ֵ ‫אֹוהב ׁשָ לֹום ו‬:
,‫ְרֹודף ׁשָ לֹום‬ ֵ
Hillel and Shammai received [the oral tradition] from
them. Hillel used to say: be of the disciples of Aaron,
loving peace and pursuing peace, loving mankind
and drawing them close to the Torah.
,‫ ּודְ ֹלא י ָ ֵליף‬.‫ י ֵָסף‬,‫מֹוסיף‬
ִ ‫ ּודְ ֹלא‬.‫ ָא ֵבד ׁשְ ֵמּה‬,‫ נָ ֵגד ׁשְ מָ א‬,‫אֹומר‬
ֵ ‫הּוא הָ י ָה‬
:‫ חָ ֵלף‬,‫ ּודְ ִאׁשְ ַּת ֵּמׁש ּבְתָ גָא‬.‫קְ טָ לָא ַחּיָב‬
He [also] used to say: one who makes his name great
causes his name to be destroyed; one who does not add
[to his knowledge] causes [it] to cease; one who does
.;not study [the Torah] deserves death
 ִ ‫ ּוכְׁשֶ אֲ ִני לְ ַעצ‬.‫ ִמי ִלי‬,‫ ִאם ֵאין אֲ ִני ִלי‬,‫אֹומר‬
‫ מָ ה‬,‫ְמי‬ ֵ ‫הּוא הָ י ָה‬
:‫ ֵאימָ תָ י‬,‫ ו ְִאם ֹלא ַעכְׁשָ יו‬.‫אֲ ִני‬
He [also] used to say: If I am not for myself,
who is for me? But if I am for my own self
[only], what am I? And if not now, when?
