Parashat Haman
Portion of the Manna – Special Reading for Sustenance
(Exodus 16:4-36)
Rabbi Menachem Mendel of Riminov says that all who read the Manna Portion using the method of “Shenayim
Mikra Ve’echad Targum” (means twice the verse in Hebrew and then in Aramaic) on the Tuesday of the week of
Beshalach, are promised their sustenance won’t be lacking. The commentators cite the Yerusalmi that one who recites
this chapter every day is assured that his food will not be lacking. Levush explains that this chapter teaches that God
provides each day’s sustenance – just as He provided the manna each day in the wilderness

It is omitted on Shabbat and Festivals.

“May it be the will before You, Lord, Our God, and the God of our forefathers, that You provide a
livelihood for all of Your people, the House of Israel – and my livelihood and the livelihood of the

members of my household included with them with ease and not with pain, with honor and not with
disgrace, in a permissible manner and not in a forbidden manner, so that we will be able to perform
Your service, and study Your Torah, just as You nourished our forefathers with manna, in the
Wilderness, in a land arid and desolate.”
Remember to read this portion using the method of “Shenayim Mikra Ve’echad Targum”
which is to read each Hebrew verse twice and then once in Aramaic.

Then the Lord said to Moses, “I will rain down bread from heaven for you. The people are to go out
each day and gather enough for that day. In this way I will test them and see whether they will follow
my instructions or not.

Moses also said, “You will know that it was the Lord when He gives you meat to eat in the evening and

However, some of them didn’t listen to Moses; they kept part of it until morning, but it was full of
worms and began to smell. So Moses was angry with them.

The Israelites ate manna forty years, until they came to a land that was settled; they ate manna until
they reached the border of Canaan.

PRAYER FOR LIVELIHOOD

This prayer is often said after reading Parashat Haman. It is, however, not recited on the Shabbat and festivals.

ve'atah bahem asher vechol hayamim aleiha asher vechol ha’aretz

‫ש ָע ִשיתָ נִ ִסים וְ נִ ְפלָ א ֹות‬

ֶ ‫ְמח ֶיה ֶאת כ ָלם וְ א ָתה הוא‬
venifla’ot nisim she’asita hu ve’atah kulam et mechayeh

‫ְגד ֹול ֹות ָת ִמיד ִעם אֲ ב ֹותינו גם ב ִמ ְד ָבר ִה ְמט ְר ָת לָ הֶ ם‬

‫שמיִ ם ו ִמצור הח ָל ִמיש ה ֹוצאתָ לָ הֶ ם מיִ ם וְ גם‬

ָ ‫לֶ חֶ ם ִמן ה‬
vegam mayim lahem hotzeta hachalamish umitzur hashamayim min lechem

‫ָנת ָת לָ הֶ ם ָכל צָ ְרכיהֶ ם ִש ְמל ֹותָ ם ל ֹא בָ לְ תָ ה מ ֲעליהֶ ם כן‬

ken me’aleihem valetah lo shim’lotam tzarcheihem kol lahem natata
ָ ‫יך הָ ר ִבים ובחֲ סָ ֶד‬
‫יך הָ ֲעצו ִמים ְתזוננו ו ְתפ ְרנְ סנו‬ ָ ֶ‫ְברחֲ מ‬
ut'farnesenu tezunenu ha’atzumim uvachasadeicha harabim berachameicha

‫ו ְתכלְ ְכלנו וְ ת ְס ִפיק לָ נו ָכל צָ ְרכנו וְ צָ ְרכי ע ְמ ָך בית‬

beit amecha vetzarchei tzarchenu kol lanu vetas’pik utchelkelenu

‫יִ ְש ָראל ה ְמרו ִבים ְב ִמלוי ו ְב ֶרוח ְבלִ י טֹרח וְ ָעמָ ל ָגד ֹול‬
gadol ve’amal torach beli uvrevach bemilui hamerubim Yisrael

ָ ָ‫ִמתחת ָי ְד ָך ה ְנ ִק ָיה וְ ל ֹא ִמתחת יְ די ב‬

:‫שר וָ ָדם‬
: vadam vasar yedei mitachat velo hanekiyah yad’cha mitachat

‫אל ֹהי ואל ֹהי אֲ ב ֹותי‬ ‫יאהדוהי‬ ָ ‫יְ ִהי ָרצ ֹון ִמ ְלפָ נ‬
‫ֶיך יְ הֹוָ ײ‬

‫יתי ָכל מחֲ ס ֹורנו וְ תזְ ִמין לָ נו ָכל‬

ִ ‫ש ָת ִכין לִ י ולְ אנְ שי ב‬

kol lanu vetaz’min machasorenu kol veiti uleanshei li shetachin

‫ש ָעה‬
ָ ‫צָ ְרכנו לְ כָ ל י ֹום ָוי ֹום מחיינו די מחֲ ס ֹורנו ולְ כָ ל‬
sha'ah ulechol machasorenu dei mechayeinu vayom yom lechol tzarchenu

‫שע ֹותינו די ִספוקנו ולְ כָ ל ֶעצֶ ם מ ֲעצָ מינו די‬

ָ ‫ש ָעה ִמ‬
ָ ְ‫ו‬
dei me’atzameinu etzem ulechol sipukenu dei misha’oteinu vesha’ah

‫ִמ ְח ָיתנו ִמ ָי ְד ָך הט ֹובָ ה וְ הָ ְרחָ בָ ה וְ ל ֹא ִכ ִמעוט ִמ ְפ ָעלינו‬

mif'aleinu chimi’ut velo veharchavah hatovah miyadcha mich’yatenu

‫וְ ק ֹוצֶ ר חֲ סָ דינו ו ִמזְ עיר ְגמול ֹותינו וְ יִ ְהיו ְמז ֹונ ֹותי ו ְמז ֹונ ֹות‬
um'zonot mezonotai veyih’yu gemuloteinu umizeir chasadeinu vekotzer

‫יתי וְ ז ְר ִעי וְ ֶזרע ז ְר ִעי ְמסו ִרים ְב ָי ְד ָך וְ ל ֹא ְביד‬

ִ ‫אנְ שי ב‬
beyad velo beyad’cha mesurim zar’i vezera vezari veiti an’shei

:‫שר ָו ָדם‬
ָ ָ‫ב‬

It is You, Who are the Lord alone. You have made the heavens, the loftiest heavens, the earth and everything that
is upon it, the seas and everything that is in them; and You give life to all of them. It is You Who performed
miracles and great wonders always for our forefathers. Also in the wilderness You rained down for them food
from heaven, and from the rock of flint You brought forth for them water, and also You provided for them all
their needs, and their clothing did not wear out upon them, So too, in Your mercy that is abundant and in Your
kindness that is powerful, nourish us, sustain us, support us, and supply all our needs and the needs of Your
people the House of Israel, which are abundant, with fullness and plenty, without travail or great toil, coming
from Your pure hand, and not coming from the hands of flesh and blood.
May it be the will before You, Lord, my God and the God of my forefathers, that You prepare for me and for the
members of my household all that we lack and make ready for us all our needs, for every day after day of our
lives, sufficient for our needs, and for every hour after hour of our hours, sufficient supply, and for every bone of
our bones sufficient nourishment, in accordance with Your hand that is benevolent and generous, and not
according to the meagreness of our deeds, the limited kindness due us, and from the paucity of the payment we
deserve. May it be that my nourishment and the nourishment of the members of my household, my offspring and
the children of my offspring are committed to Your hand and not to the hand of flesh and blood.
