DESIGN OF OUTLETS (CRUMPS’ OPEN FLUME TYPE)
DESIGN OF OUTLETS (CRUMPS’ OPEN FLUME TYPE)
 The discharge formula for the open flume outlet is given as:

Q = C Bt H3/2

Where: Q is related to the coefficient of discharge, C, as given in the table

below; Bt is the width of the throat; and H is the height of the full supply level of
the supply channel above the crest level of the outlet in ft.
Bt C
0.2 ft – 0.29 ft, 2.90
0.3 ft – 0.39 ft 2.95
Over 0.4ft 3.00
DESIGN OF OUTLETS (CRUMPS’ OPEN FLUME TYPE)
 Steps involved in design
1. Setting of outlet (Crest level of outlet below FSL of canal)
H = 0.9 D
2. Throat width (not less than 3 inch)
Bt = Q outlet / C H3/2
3. Length of crest (2 H)
4. Radius of u/s transition (2 H)
5. Setting back
(Q outlet / Q canal ) × Width of canal
DESIGN OF WATER COURSES
 Design it as Lines and Rectangular using Manning’s formula:
Q = 1.49/n AR2/3S1/2
 Slope of water course = 1:5000 (Normally) varies from 1:3000~1:4000. Min
1:10000
 B = D, n = 0.013
 Calculate the depth of water in watercourse
COMMAND STATEMENT
It is prepared to ensure that the slope of an irrigation channel is capable of
commanding the area to be irrigated.
1. From head to tail (when the water at the head of canal is fixed)
2. From tail to head (when the topography of the area is dominating and water level
at the head can be adjusted)
