The school is one of the universal
symbols for education. It is a place where
learners of varied ages, backgrounds and
needs are brought together to learn.
• Education is a process of acquiring and
equipping people with knowledge and skills
and values that will allow him/ her to
actively participate in varied social tasks and
activities.
• Education is also a systematic process of
transmitting knowledge and skills and values
that will allow him or her to actively
participate in varied social tasks and activities.
Education can be Formal, Informal
and Non- formal.
Formal Education is:

classroom. A student follows a curriculum and is
being graded on his or her performance. Your
experiences in your current school are fostered by
this type of education.

 Subject oriented
 Full time
 Leads to certificates, diplomas, degrees
Informal Education

 Individual learns from the exposure to the
environment at home, at work , at play
etc.
Non- formal Education
 Flexible
 Life, environment and learner oriented
 Diversified in content and method
 Built on learner participation
 Mobilizes local resources
 Enriches human and environmental
potential

education, let us watch the following video

As British sociologist Herbert Spencer explains, functions are
important to be performed as they make the society whole. If
each function is working well, society attains progress.
The functions of education are the following:
a. Produce productive Citizens
Individuals are politically socialized through a curriculum
designed by the state.
People are taught to develop positive outlooks toward concepts
like liberty and democracy, as well as to view the government
as an organization of authority.
b. Promote Self Actualization
Education develops one’s sense of self. As a huge part of the
discovery process of oneself, education encourages having
vision to become self-actualized. Moreover, it enables one to
see your strengths and maintain them. It enables one to
determine weakness and adjust to them. This helps one reach
full potential and establish oneself as a whole.
